Hi, Saw this at the local shop, according to the liner the tracks were selected by Nicolette but mixed by Plaid, looked like it might be interesting and not a bad price for a 2CD set, but I thought I'd give a shout to the list before I shelled out. Anybody heard this yet? Thanks, John

From a technique perspective (in other words, nothing against the track selection) I think that this release could qualify as the low-light of the whole DJ Kicks series . . . even the CJ Bolland CD is better (now that's something you won't hear every day) . . . there is no real mixing per se, only fade ins and fade outs backed with sonic beds which, as I understand it, were created by Plaid. 337is digging the Tomas Jirku MP3s -----Original Message----- From: idm-owner@hyperreal.org [mailto:idm-owner@hyperreal.org] On Behalf Of Irene McC Sent: Monday, April 19, 1999 1:23 PM To: jdalton@mail.net.tw; idm@hyperreal.org Subject: Re: (idm) Nicolette mix CD On 15 Apr 99, John wrote re: (idm) Nicolette mix CD:

Then would Claude Young's be the highlight? I love the way he scratches and beat-juggles techno, making it clear that it was a live mix, because some of the scratches and fades are really awkward. He's definitely done something different from your traditional mix CD. And although i much prefer the selection of Nicolette's, I've listened to Claude's more than all except Kemistry and Storm's. Mixing ability and novelty? Young. "I've listened to Claude's more than all except Kemistry and Storm's." Yeah, I've listened to the Kemistry and Storm CD a lot of late and it is some REALLY dark stuff . . . those girls bang hard. Can anyone vouch that the cd is indeed a fair representation of their actual mixing skills or has someone done some extensive pro-tools-type editing . . . if it's a live turntable to recording mix, color me impressed . . .

Is it a sign of some latent sexism that we question whether a woman-assembled DJ Kicks is live or only digital because it is great? Not accusing, just wondering if others had thoughts. At 04:32 PM 4/19/99 -0400, L. Rollins wrote:

In my opinion, the Claude Young Dj Kicks cd is the best!! The track selection is pretty awesome and varied. There is some Chain Reaction on there, hard minimal (Surgeon/Mark Bell/Ratio (and other Central projects), and there is even some Dopplereffekt (electro) Plus, unlike most of the other Dj Kicks he is actually djing on it. And he plays doubles, mixes, and does tricks

Carl Craig is one of my favorite artists, but his Dj Kicks is not one of my favorites. Some of his mixes are just wacked as hell. There are some good tunes and I am happy I own it.

I haven't picked this one up yet. I wasn't in a real hurry to buy this, since I already own most of the tracks they play. I saw them spin a little while ago and they are damn good. They wouldn't need to use any computer editing, but that doesn't mean they didn't. I'll have to listen to it before I could really comment. They are really good djs so I would expect that they actually mixed it. _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
