First, a question... I thought UKP and that little symbol next to the 12 (sorry, it's not on my keyboard) referred to the same thing. But you've got two different values listed there. What's the story? Just curious. Anyhoo... I often have the same problem with stuff coming into Canada from the US. So I suggest that you do what I do for future orders you place with out-of-country businesses: request them to mark the package as promotional material and declare it to have no value, or at least a low value like a dollar a disc. Some places won't do this, but most smaller businesses (like s://kimo and probably FE) will. Greg

OK this is how C&E (Customs and Excise) work out their charges (more or less anyway) They take the order total value (including the shipping costs) add the relevant duty (3% for CD's I think) and then add VAT 17.5% If the order is marked "Gift" and is less that 36UKP in value then it is exempt from these charges If it is not a gift but is less that 18UKP in value it is also exempt. So I guess you could somehow claim it was a gift and you may get away with it and get a refund! I have recently heard that they have amended these rules so that no internet order is exempt from charges - how they tell whether something was ordered over the internet I don't know Tim Steve Taylor wrote:

It could be the fact that the CD's were all shrinkwrapped, and the Box had a Forced Exposure Stamp on. And I guess they are used to seeing packages from CDNOW etc. But then FE marked the value as $15 which is about 10 UKP, so charges shouldnt apply, i could contest this, but i doubt its worth it (plus there is only a customs Postal address, no phone or email). Actually there wasnt even an invoice with the CD's, that was sent seperately. Steve

tricky one that... when we at smallfish send stuff out, occasionally people do get taxed (tho' it seems pretty random)... we are in a double bind here...if we mark it as having no value (promotional etc) then if it gets damaged, we get no money back off the postie, but if you put the true value (ie what someone has paid) then people might get taxed at the other end... as the person who received it which would you go for? no, thinking about that it is pretty obvious...less money is probably better... it's amazing...US customs tax CDs at (i can't quite remember) 2.4cents per square meter!!! Well, I don't think you'll have problems in the EU (at least my orders from WARPMart weren't taxed... :) but you're most probably going to be taxed ordering things from everywhere else...
