Well, I've just (err... ok, for some time) been wondering why there's so many CDs that are limited to just a few hundred (if even) copies... but why? I mean, if a label is really, really small and can't afford more than a few hundred pressings, it makes sense, but otherwise? If it's out, it's limited, it's wanted and it's thus getting paid loads of cash for it, it doesn't get the label any extraneous profit... (Just take Jimi Tenor's "Venera EP" as an example - limited to 1.500 copies, and out on WARP who clearly aren't forced to limit their releases; also, I _do_ think there's more than 1.500 Jimi Tenor fans out there... <waves> "Or at least it's one _here_!" :) So... can anybody shed a bit of light on this? <Holds up a "Mr. Greg Eden!" sign... err... no... :)))> -- Kurt B. Let's take a label like A-Musik. Most of their cds are limited to 1000. They do not advertise this but in numerous interviews this is pointed out. Now why is this done? because they have a hard time selling a 1000. Making more than a 1000 just becomes a financial liability. I do not know how taxes work in Germany but here in the U.S. any overstock is counted as an asset and you will be taxed on it. Beyond that having to pay for more than a 1000 and only selling a 1000 cuts down on profit. This profit is important so that artists can be paid and so that the label can keep putting out releases. One last point. Recently Ambient Otaku was offered for repress if a 1000 people would comit to buying it. Guess what? a 1000 people did not come forward. And this is for a sought after item. My point is this, for some labels limited pressings are done simply for economic reasons. In the very near future the first release will be coming out on my label. These will be limited. Not because I want to limit them but because that is the financial reality. Even for bigger labels like Warp this may be true. Think of all the overstock they have to keep around. Sooner or later you have to say enough is enough. And lastly don't forget "limited editions" are a great marketing tool. -daniel On Thu, 26 Nov 1998, Kurt Pruenner wrote:

I thought about it.....but in the end, got someone to tape it for me. I think a lot of people have probably done the same....silly really. -- Ben Coffer http://www.hybridgame.demon.co.uk/

I released Loeaine as a limited edition of 500 for a few reasons. The original concept for this compilation was to make CD-R's for the amount of people that pledged during the kuci fund drive. After investigating the price of having a hundred or so CD-R's duplicated, we were pretty close to doing a real pressing at the standard minimum order of 500 CD's. So I figured, what the fuck? Whyt not just do a real pressing for the same amount of money? The original plan for the tracks was going to be one CD full of live performances on my show. After realizing the difficulties involved in releasing live stuff (poor sound quality, licensing nightmares frim released tracks, artists' lack of desire to release substandard tracks) I decided to just ask musicians that had been on my show or that I had arranged to play on ROTPG. I asked about twice as many artists as I thought I could use, because I expected alot of them to not come through. The only people I asked that couldn't come through were Electric Skychurch, (who can't for legal reasons due to thier moonshine troubles), Taylor (who didn't have a track and didn't have time to record one by the deadline), Symbiosis (who had just finished an album and didn't have any other material), and Ben Neill (who had also just finished an album, and his manager wouldn't let him do an unreleased track). In order to fit everyone's tracks, I had to do 2 CD's, and I still turned down a few submissions for various reasons. When I was making release forms, I put in the contract that we'd only make 500 copies, along with clauses that said they weren't entering a contract with uci and that they retained all publishing and ownership rights. 500 was all I could afford at the time, and this project was already much bigger than I had originally intended. At the time, a limited edition of 500 2 cd sets seemed like a whole lot, but in retrospect, I would have been wiser to release one CD without calling it a limited edition, print a thousand of them on color artwork, and just sell them to distributors, repressing as needed. But that in mind, I still think a hand numbered, limited edition double cd benefit comp on semi-translucent paper is a pretty cool way to start a label. Maybe someday if Peach really takes off then it will be a sought-after collectors item. -Daniel daniel@peachfuzz.net ICQ# 16654223 ============================================================================== Peach Space Disco For Fish Tacos PO Box 1902 8-10pm Wednesdays, KUCI 88.9fm Huntington Beach, CA 92647 www.peachfuzz.net/space www.peachfuzz.net ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Coming Soon - Sterile: Orange County's Intelligent Electronic Monthly www.peachfuzz.net/sterile ============================================================================== "It's only funny if somone gets hurt" - Tom McLean
