Hello, idm-heads - How far along has the Trance Europe Express series gotten? I've only seen up to # 3 Stateside, but the rumour mill (as well as certain curious Internet sites) suggests that the number of the counting shall be 5. Why, why, why? Clarify, please. And what about that Trance Atlantic series? Is it worth the trip (no pun intended, but take it if you can get it)? Does the title imply that this latter series focuses on U.S. artists, or just on artists who use splishy-splashy water samples incessantly, like that spooky last piece on the first disk of "Lifeforms"? Ooooo, always weirds me out at night. Yes, Virginia, that was a string of bubbles, just like in the Lawrence Welk show. By the way, was Lawrence Welk an ambient pioneer? (Hint: the correct answer is "no") (Correction: Unless you count the sound of the close-miked imploding bubbles. That would be a rare sample...) By the way, the moment of revelation is upon us, and you heard it here first: (actually, probably 42 others have made this same observation, but I plan to send a robot back in time to silence them, and then take all the credit) - THE FIRST TRANCE CUT WAS "ON THE RUN" BY PINK FLOYD. Alright, I'm off. Zenon M. Feszczak Ambient Hacker

Thank you for the info! Are you sure #5 and Textures are the same record? I just checked CDEurope (http://www.cdeurope.com) and found separate listings for these titles, including separate call numbers. 3

As far as I know textures is number five. I actually picked it up despite the fact that I have all of the other TEX releases I think are worth having just because it's such a consistant pair of cd's to have around. The insert for textures had one through four listed as separate and textures as the fifth...I could, though, completely mistaken. Picked up the new orbital...don't know if it's been mentioned here as I've gotten on this bus only recently...I think it's better than Snivilization but still lacks something. Moves more towards towards a dance groove than anything prior save remixes. I'm all for ozone but the fact that one of the tracks was recorded using only the power of greenpeace's solar van is, I think, pretty indicative of the tone of the new stuff. paul. Cunt is trash. The other tracks are a fine slice. Booklet is cool. Rusty

It's TEEX3 from about 94/95 DISC 1 : Air liquide / 808 state / banco de gaia / luke slater / pulse / joey beltram / sun electric / holy language / resistance / kiesthesia / u-ziq / caustic window DISC 2 : Mouse on mars / ultramarine / coco steel & Lovebomb / william orbit / inner space / link / nuw idol / the grid / alter ego / biosphere / infinity (juan atkins) / eddie "flashin" fowlkes / emergency broadcast network Comments? It's a compilation - some good tracks, some bad tracks. The tracklisting *looks* impressive, but all in all it's forgettable and dated. That being said, I prefer TEEX4. Counter question : is 5 worth getting? Saw that knocking around in a used shop recently. I * ~~ incomplete without surface noise ~~ [Ae]

I thought 5 was the weakest of the series. The first four are worth owning. The enclosed booklets are very well-done, also. Trance Atlantic Express also isn't bad. It's a crying shame that Volume is now an ex-parrot. My bank account is happier, but that Breakbeat Science series was divine madness. 3

i agree with you about the booklets, but disagree about the rest. i've got both trance europe express 5 and trance atlantic 2, and ta2 is _really_ bad. only the tracks by the single cell orchestra (who are they anyway) and a deephouse track (last track on disk 2, forgot the title) are nice. tex5 has some nice contributions from andrea parker, the advent, dr rockit, marshall jefferson/lumpheads and neil landstrumm. but it's a matter of taste, ofcourse.. name [~] peter cozijn e-mail [~] pu@dds.nl http://huizen.dds.nl/~pu [~] homepage

I still haven't got TEEX5, but I'm going to chime in with my opinion here... TA1 was atrocious, except for the Hardkiss tracks. 2 was somewhat better, specifically because of Dubtribe (and what is up with them lately -- anyone? please? Drukman? Bueller?) and Single Cell Orchestra. SCO is Miguel Fierro from San Francisco. Close friends with Daum Bentley (Freaky Chakra). Has 3 albums out that I can name: _Dead Vent 7_ (Reflective) _Freaky Chakra vs Single Cell Orchestra_ (Astralwerks) _Single Cell Orchestra_ (Asphodel) The last is essential, the others less so. _Dead Vent 7_ is a concept album about a space voyage that goes wrong. Way wrong. Whether or not this is a good album, I leave up to you. I certainly think it's worthwhile. _FC vs SCO_ is just not a patch on their live shows together, which were revelatory for me. Too housy tedious, which, alas, seems to be Daum's direction of late. _SCO_ is fine fine triphop, but then, some of the songs date back to 1992. But they do work in context. Great stuff. Not too hard to find, either. Supposedly Single Cell Orchestra is some sort of clever reference, but I've never been able to place it. I'm sure I'll feel stupid when it's someday explained to me.

The self-titled album is a favorite. I wouldn't really call it trip-hop, though. The beats are mostly down-tempo, but there's very little sampling or lo-fi. It's pretty much all synth with programmed drum parts. Emphasis on that forgotten archaism - MELODY. Beautiful moods and textures. These tracks have appeared on many comps, so if you like any of them - "Transmit Liberation" is a stand-out mood piece - go for this album. I believe CDNow has the entire album in RealAudio format for on-line listening.

I assumed it was an extension of the expression "one-man orchestra". 3

i thought it was a play on 'single cell organism', as in amoeba and such. with maybe a glance at the 70's prog rock group electric light orchestra? ah, who knows. rob

I've got them all, and _dead vent 7_, if you can get over the cheesy voice-over, is a great album, and at least as worthwhile as _Single Cell Orchestra_. Don't bother with Freaky Chakra vs Single Cell Orchestra though (IMHO), it is very repetive beats without the emotion that makes SCO so grand. On Fri, 5 June 1998, at 05:15:59, Andrew Hime wrote:

triphop? hmm.. I won't categorize, but that's a weird label.
