I think it's best to start with some history. Nobody on the list has yet mentioned coming to idm via the orb, which I am sure was the case for many North Americans. 1991 saw Little Fluffy Clouds on the radio and the KLF on the radio and Much Music in Canada. But instead of going from the Orb to the Artificial Intelligence series, that lag--there was about 1 and a half years--had to be filled with something. It was of course, more Orb, the Ambient Dub series (on Beyond?), and anything produced by Andrew Weatherall. Although Steve (kung.funk) is on a pogrom maligning anything not directly attached to drum'n'bass, those original singles by Banco de Gaia, the Higher Intelligence Agency, Biosphere and so on were what turned me onto idm. I still find them more satisfying than most of the idm output of the last 12 months. Which brings me to the Boards of Canada. They know their history. It's hidden in bits and pieces. First of all, the samples. Just meaningless bits of nothingness, spliced here and there. No politics, just something that sounds cool. The beats. Laid back, always. Sort of like Autechre discovered cool jazz. In the end you need melody, and these boys got it. Drum-n-bass doesn't. At least the experimental stuff doesn't. There is the occasional song--4 by Aphew Twin and Mushroom Compost by mu-ziq that slips in--but otherwise it's just beats. On the BoC 7", that harsh noise on chinook just has to be a homage to Kraftwerk's breathing noise on Tour de France. There's nothing new in Boards of Canada. But they've pulled what they like--coincidentally what most of this list likes--and put it together into the best down-tempo stuff I have heard this year. Other recent pick-ups: State of the Nu Art 2 -- Hit and miss. Couple great tracks, Digital Truth, Marc Williams and Bedouin Ascent. Derrick May -- Innovator. Not much to say. Buy it. See where techno came from and how much people are still copying. (Is it labelled wrong? What I thought was kaotic harmony 2.04 is labelled a relic mix.) Small Fish with Spine -- Ultimate Sushi. Bought it at the Funkungfusion show. Nice mix of funky beats and industrial crunch. A bridge between her Neotropic album and the show. Chill Out or Die IV. (1995) Rising High always had the touch. Still my favorite record label. More chill than this April in Boston. How many body parts would a Dreamfish album cost me? Was there one? Weepy tunes thread seems to be over, but u-ziq's Sick Porter is what does it to me. Also Beaumont Hannant's Sprint A87 Mug. Idm spot: 4 by Aphew Twin was played as filler music on NPR's All Things Considered. (A national news radio program for non-US types. onnow: Flowchart - Flutterbye, Butterfly. Best pop song of the year. Phil Downey

See my post 'My descent to IDM' ... I got into IDM via the orb, fsol, and oribital.

You jumped in your mouth here. First of all you said that there is nothing new in BoC and then described the way of creating new fresh and progressive music. New music doesn't come from nowhere. ---> What then ? Nobody is innovative ! I think there are a lot of innovative and fresh stuff out there... check out Phoencia/Jewa, Plug Research stuff or new Leila to name few. They've also pulled everything they like and put it together in their minds and created different forms of music. Of course we all hear influences with other artists in their music, but that's the beauty of being into music, and not being killed by the time..... If time gets you then you'll end up saying : "When I listened to music, music was so innovative. These artists of nowdays are just copycats. Music isn't what it used to be anymore." Sentences like these I've heard many times, but always by people who are not focused enough on the music or simply from those who are killed by the time. Statement like this has even been said here on idm, but in different shape, but meaning was the same..... Reveal yourself, you flamer ! bye rob p.s. Can I get list of few albums that are innovative ? But they must be released in 97 or 98.... The question is : Is there such an album ? If I said name few innovative IDM albums...... you would all came up with lists like SAW1, Bytes, Amber, Tango'n'Vectif, A Collection Of Short Stories, . . . :-(

Amon Tobin - Bricolage Spring Heel Jack - Busy Thirsty Curious Photek - Modus Operandi Squarepusher - Hard Normal Daddy All are ostensibly Drum & Bass, but stray so far from the orthodoxy of conventional D&B that they have almost nothing in common with D&B other than certain drum programming techniques (importantly, not the sounds, just the techniques). Name an album that sounds remotely like any of these. To me, they're as far apart as SAW I is from Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld. Autechre - Chiastic Slide Ae continues to forge their own path, to the point where there are now people trying to emulate their style from Incunabula onwards. Che

Circadian Rhythms - 'Internal Clock' I can't tell where the live playing ends and the programmed stuff begins. C. -- Chris.Hilker (cspot@hyperreal.org) "Never really been too happy, never really been too sad And he doesn't know what he wanted, and he doesn't know what he had"

How about Gastr Del Sol : Camoufleur, im having a mini love affair with this CD, it has everything, abstract electronics (care of Markus Popp from Oval), improvisation, good melodies, even acoustic guitar and singing! its hardly idm... but then if you really want a truly innovative album youve got to look for something that cant be easily categorised ;-) Steve

this album is so good. the songs make me cry and laugh and be happy to be alive. a great progress from their earlier work, _camofleur_ is gastr del sol's finest. i'm upset that you have it on CD though.. the vinyl sounds beautiful. -mc

Witchman's long player assembles enough influences that you might not view it as "innovative" but, in my opinion, it sounds like nothing else I've heard recently. The same for "Waveform" - the combination of grit, isolation, and smoothness lifts it to the top of my list. But it doesn't have to be an album proper to be innovative - some of J Majik's tracks and Andre Gurov's b-sides show more newness and creativity than either of the albums I mentioned before (even with the complaint that what Vadim does is basically retro). James PS - For bonus points, is anybody else going to see Tortoise in New Orleans on the 16th of May? And are they supposed to be selling the compilation of re- mixes (Thrill Jockey 12-9, I believe)? Anybody got a phone number for Howlin'Wolf? Will I ever shut up and stop asking questions?

Now I see why we don't agree with B12... I don't rate too much anything from this list except 'Hard Normal Daddy' coz it's not D'n'B as other three albums. Squarepusher makes techno music and Amon Tobin and Spring Heel Jack has almost band sounding. Don't get me wrong here, I like music on those two albums (specially first 2 tracks on Bricolage) but I don't like the way how they're produced....I can't explain the main reason, but it somehow doesn't fit with stuff I prefer. I've also been listening to Photek 'Modus Operandi' , just once in my freind's house and I didn't like it much... maybe because of just one listening, so I cannot give you right opinion about it. To me Amon and Jack sound really overproduced, it seems to me that they're more concentrated on sound and production than on music... they sound almost like rock to me. That's just my opinion...I respect your musical taste, and I'm glad that someone likes the stuff I don't . . . I really love Plug's "Drum N Bass For Papa" and every Plug released, he's so brilliant....I cannot wait for next Vibert release. I love the way his stuff is produced...Vibert is always concentrated on beats and that crazy mellodies and humorous samples, rather than on sounding and production... he is one of the most innovative producers of nowdays, and really deserves more respect... IMO, main differnece between Jenkinson and Vibert is in approach to the music. Jenkinson almost allways does the stuff that hit you right in your face, you know what I mean...he is a hitmaker. And Vibert is much more discreet and that's the main reason why Vibert is much more underrated and will always (hope not) be somehow behind the scene... Don't get me wrong here, I like them both....but I think they are both equaly good and important for the music of nowdays... bye rob np: B12 "Basic Emotion"
