I was just curious as to what you guys thought of the video for the Chemical Brother's - Electrobank. Personally, I thought it was really awesome...Wouldn't it be fuckin' cool if someone _actually_ used techno to do a routine to in the Olympics, such as figure skating or gymnastics? Was the video on MTV's Amp? I always wanted to see the show but comes on too late for me. On the point about playing Techno in Olympics: it isn't going to happen; not anytime soon, anyway. Figure skating and gymnastics are some most conservative sports around. The judges frown upon anything but classical. On the professional circuit, things could be different. -- Niraj Agarwalla -- niraj@shore.net -- http://www.shore.net/~niraj

It was a great departure from the "let's project computer generated geometry in 3D and call it a video" trend that's been plaguing "Amp". Otherwise, the Spike Jonez directed "Electrobank" was OK at best. Definitely the best part of the video were the shots of the jealous bitchy blonde gymnast on the sidelines.

Sad but true. Even Burt Bacharach is too punk for those judges. As for techno in the Olympics in *general* is a different story. 808 State did a song called "Olympic State" in 1990 commissioned for the next Winter Olympics? P.S. There was one skiier (sp?) from the last Winter Olympics who was asked about his favorite music, and he listed like 5 Meat Beat Manifesto albums, so go figure. =================================================================== Brian MacDonald <brianm@kuci.org> KUCI 88.9 fM in Irvine, CA -- Orange County *** WINDY & CARL, GRIMBLE GRUMBLE, and SPLINTER GROUP *** Tuesday, April 14th @ Metagallery in Santa Ana/ 8:30pm / ALL AGES! presented by Nightnoise Soundsystem and KUCI -- E-mail me for info ===================================================================

The track was in aid of Manchester's bid to be the host city for the 1996 summer Olympics (which Atlanta, of course, won). Not sure if it was commissioned or donated. And before anyone else mentions it, Ken Ishii did music for the opening and closing ceremonies of this year's winter games. Well, it might've been, but i "borrowed" the use of my school's T1 line during class one period, and saw it on some webpage.. and you're right about the olympics, but heck, it still would be cool!=) -------- Spawn email: spawn@mad.scientist.com icq: 1356842 web: http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Vault/2731/ "I am Homer of the Borg. ah, but you forget about snowboarders! I heard that 'Hits from the Bong' by Cypress Hill was their most popular accompaniment in Nagano this winter. At 11:03 AM -0400 4/6/98, Niraj Agarwalla wrote:

Yeah, I thought it was pretty interesting that they got him to direct it, you know? Seems kinda odd for a major director to do something obscure like this, but hey, whutever pays the bills.

Hell yeah...she was all "i'm so lame!I lost to this person making a stereotypical comeback while injured!" * And how the gymnast got "magical inspiration" when she saw her parents..hehe.. =) * note on the injured part, do you guys think it was some referance to that one US Gymnast that the coach made her compete while she was injured? Can't remember her name, i think it was the beam or pommel horse or some crap that he made her do..... -------- Spawn email: spawn@mad.scientist.com icq: 1356842 web: http://www.geocities.com/Area51/Vault/2731/ "Mr. Worf...Fire at Will" >BZZT< "Hey, where'd Riker go?" --------

I think you're thinking of Spike Lee. Spike Jonez isn't really a "major director", all I've seen from him so far are music vids, including this one and Daft Punk's "Da Funk". And as for the Chems being "obscure"... well, let's not go there. It'll just get nasty. :) Greg

Actually at this point, I think more people would have heard of Chemical Brothers than Spike Jonez... but whatever. As for the rest of "Amp", is it just me or has the quality of the show gone *way* done since a year ago? The videos on the show are still far more entertaining than what gets shown on the rest of the channel, but there's a growing "sameness" and mediocrity about the artists featured on the show noways. I'm relatively new, so sorry if this resparks a boring old debate. I guess it's expected, but still i miss the shows where they'd throw in an old Run DMC, Afrika Baambata, or Kraftwerk video... =================================================================== Brian MacDonald <brianm@kuci.org> KUCI 88.9 fM in Irvine, CA -- Orange County *** WINDY & CARL, GRIMBLE GRUMBLE, and SPLINTER GROUP *** Tuesday, April 14th @ Metagallery in Santa Ana/ 8:30pm / ALL AGES! presented by Nightnoise Soundsystem and KUCI -- E-mail me for info ===================================================================

Finally something I know the answer to... =) Dan Perry keeps a listing of all the amp shows, visit his page at http://www.execpc.com/~danperry/index.html Drop him a line, I'm sure he'd like to know someone found his list useful. - Bobby
