I think this track is brilliant. If you listen to it through really kick-ass headphones it'll make your brain bigger and more powerful. It will make your life longer and your orgasms blissful and your hair fuller and your skin clearer. Seriously, give it another whirl. It's conceptual art. It's a song made out of the complexities of a waveform, and it demonstrates how intricate and beautiful even the simplest sound can be. I like to think that it was made by setting up some simple parameters for the sound, or maybe several interacting simultaneous waveforms, and just letting it do what it'll do. I once saw Space Needle use a dozen effects proicessors to carefully and precisely fuck with their guitars and drums to the point that they could just leave the stage for ten minutes and let the vacuum tubes do their job. It would be evil to play "Alku" over a PA at a party or to try to mix it in with other songs. You would hurt people. But for solo listening, I love it to death. -CF -----Original Message----- From: The Rare Guy [SMTP:buh@clark.net] *Alku*: This track consists of one long beep whose filter cutoff starts modulating in about the halfway point of the track and the modulation speeds up and speeds up until the end of the track. it sounds like a couple of pure sine waves, in the middle actually the pitch modulates also, not just the filter cutoff, but I don't think it's anything that I can't do with my synth. .auddplte <-- lfo: we are back __ __\ \ / /_\ \ \_____/ , m7=

ah panasonic. I talked to a guy who saw them somewhere in the UK (i think) and said they were just brilliant. I've got all of their cd releases and am amazed every time I throw any of them into the changer. VERY minimalistic. VERY heavy. VERY good. Of all of the Panasonic releases, I would have to say that "Kulma" is my favorite. Everything from droning distorted molasses filter sweeps to dirt heavy repetition. Amazing. Also, some of Vanio's other projects such as 0, are also very good, although in more of a lighter IDM vein. If you get a chance, check them out. Anyone know if they are coming to Los Angeles anytime in the near future? _________________________________________________ Brian Rachielles- UC Santa Barbara (.b) Production Director KCSB fm 91.9 1997-98 Audio Program thurs 2-4am ambient-idm-noise web- http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Club/4980

I want to know whether its a show i'll enjoy, since we don't get this kind of thing in Montreal quite as often as many other big cities, i'd like to take advantage of it, if i like the music...and don't worry, if i like it, i'll buy their albums and support their musics! ditto... however, let us NOT forget "uranokemia" - first cut on the "osasto" ep. has an incredible robotic edge to it, as do most of their tracks in general, but give this tune a minute or two...and well...HIT THE DECK. blows my cranium to shreds every time. storming shite. wooo. i just picked up panasonic's kulma for the amazingly low price of $6. kind of funny. i was in the rekkid store, picked it up (it was $15.99). asked to listen to it.. liked it, but determined i couldn't afford it. so i went up to the register and saw they had misplaced it in the 'used' pile and they put a $6 tag on it. so i got it. hee hee. really, really nice. very minimal. and you can feeeeeel it all through your guttyworks. really nice work with the old 808. of course, that could just be the ripping stomache i've got. time for another trip to the bathroom. i love sharing all my personal bodily functions with list members. ;) take care. - wells oliver / s0ewoliv@titan.vcu.edu " when our worlds they fall apart when the walls come tumbling in though we may deserve it it will be worth it."

nono, i really like EN, but panasonic is poop. i honestly don't understand why people like them. not at all. we played with them in cleveland last summer. we saw what they do and heard what comes out of it. whoever: their live show is MUCH MUCH better than their recorded stuff. but it's still not very good. it's like they try to impress everyone with their music-less-ness. :) nothing like EN, where EN is pure human. so absolutely human. you know what i mean? there's GROOOOOOOOOVE! nothing like that at all in panasonic. the sounds aren't even interesting. EN's abrasiveness is comparable to autechre's abrasiveness: it's ok. it's permissable because the entire composition works well and moves you and goes somewhere. EN is especially powerful and emotional, panasonic lacks power and emotion altogether. just before they finished their set (panasonic in cleveland) they tried as hard as they could to blow out the PA the club owner rented especially for them, and they did, costing the club owner more money to throw the party than he made. everyone was covering their ears for the last five minutes of their set. everyone. and they were still fucking smiling. no, i don't like panasonic. i'm hoping FM Einheit (my favourite EN guy :) will knock some goodness into them. -eric _____________________________________________________ :: eric sherman szale@doubtful.com :: :: doubtful productions www.doubtful.com ::

Yeah i mean i mainly base my views of them on a live gig in sheffield from about 2.5years ago... but i do enjoy their albums (albeit not often).... they were absolutely stunning live imo.. but i can imagine how it could fall apart lie or just be boring.. ...and then Jimi Tenor came on and did a live set which was pretty hilarious and then Tom Jenkinson came on and played the most amazing fretless bass, and danced to his drum fills this was the first time i heard what eventually became 'feed me wierd things'. Its hard to remember just how new squarepusher sounded back then, not long ago at all really .....Pretty good night all in all really ;-)

i guess i feel i must speak up for the other side. of what i have of panasonic (kulma & vakio) i love them. i havent had the chance to see them live, but i can see how a live performance has the chance to be _very_ different from their recordings. no, panasonic has no groove. they arent trying to groove. panasonic is minimal (taken to extremes at times) simple, thoughtful, enjoyable, listenable, zen-like, trance-inducing, and it made my friend essej say "this is the only music that i have heard that caused physical pain. please turn it off." im a sucker for art. yeah, i get that, too. lassigue bendthaus does this to me, too. tracks 3 and 7 on cloned have painful clicking sounds, and render on _render_ has this white noise filter-sweep sound right before the vox start that makes my medulla cringe. * #### a disturbance in a system. #### laerm. @voicenet.com #### the future is in beta. I experience something very similar when listening to 'Onko' by Mika Vainio. He uses what sound like static electric discharges in an early part of the track and later on those clicks you describe appear. It's deadly quiet and then some really high pitched clicks come in (obviously it's much more than I can describe). The music (?) really tests your stereo's transient high pitch abilities, and you feel the clicks more than you hear them on a good system. -Ed
