I was at CDWorld today, and saw a cd in the St. Etienne section called "Casino." It looked like a compilation, with tracks on it by people like the Chemical Bros, Aphex Twin, and Death in Vegas, to name a few. A couple of questions; Isn't St. Etienne a band(? act?) of it's own right? Is this a cd (2cd, actually) of covers? Songs they like by people they like? What's up with it? And, most importantly, how is it, specifically the Aphex track? Worth $20some? noah ps: thanks to everyone who gave me info on Darren Price.. you all were a world of help. now i know he IS cool, after all. (sound of cd being put on heavy rotation)

$20some? it's actually called "Casino Classics" and it is a double disc of St. Etienne songs that have been remixed by other artists. if you don't like the already housey St. to begin with, don't bother, as most tracks even though musically appealing, have diva's in full effect. (at least from what I could remember)

no way !! the aphex mix rules supreme and the PFM track remains today the best jungle track (read: jungle, not drill'n'bass) i've ever heard. of course it's better if you can find the 12" with both AFX mixes on it and the 10" with the PFM mix (i've got the The Sea: PFM Mix 10", please let me know if you (anyone) have the 12" with both afx mixes on it to spare) __ __\ \ / /_\ \ \_____/ www.freq-div.home.ml.org

You remember very little. :-) St. Etienne is *not* a house band, and thier vocalist, Sarah Cracknell, is most definately *not* a "diva". They're a pop band, and she's a pop singer. As for the remixes, I don't have Casino Classics, but I've got the first edition of the single collection which included a bonus remix disc, most (or perhaps all) of which ended up on C.C. as well, and I quite enjoy it. The Aphex Twin mix is especially good. Wish it had the Autechre mix, tho. Greg

well, I just dug up my dub of CC, and my recollection was definitely not too much on que. they may not be originally "House" music, but since I have never heard any of their original versions, all I had to go on was some St.Etienne remixes for other artists (like Pizzicato Five remixed by St. Etienne) which seemed "housey" more than "pop". (there are "House" mixes on this, though) btw, it has 19 tracks and is a double disc release. on the whole, it still seems like too much fluff to wade thru just for a few good tracks. what I don't care for are the somewhat DANCE PARTY USA style remixes (Is Pure, Primax, Balearico, Bill Nasty, Secret Knowledge, The Aloof, Gordon King, Way Out West) some great remixes are: Chem.Bros.(can ya believe that?), Aphex Twin, David Holmes, Monkey Mafia, Death In Vegas, Lionrock, Psychonauts, PFM, & Underworld and the disappointment to me was the Andrew Weatherall mix. it's not "bad", just not great. my favorite track is the Broadcast remix which is like nothing else in the set. definitely not a dancefloor filler!
