In recent weeks, I've seen listings for several Q-Bert releases: Remix of DJ Shadow, vs. A-Trak, and vs. D-Styles. I was wondering how these recordings might be? Anything on the level with the excellent Kid Koala tape/10" that Ninja Tune put out last year? Thanks. --- Peace Hugs and Unity, Jason J. I picked up the DJ Shadow Live! Live! Live! "Camel Bobsled Race" CD late last week, and I recommend it. The frugal among you will note that supposedly "Camel Bobsled Race" will be included with initial copies of the upcoming compilation in the US. I understand the MoWax "Camel Bobsled Race" is extremely limited. 24 mins. Yes, it draws entirely (or almost) from previously-released DJ Shadow tracks, but this is not a simple megamix. It is a very effective reinterpretation, with astonishing scratching -- Q-Bert's hands really do the talking, and are quite articulate at that. --Mark On Mon, 22 Dec 1997, Jason J. Tar wrote:

well... i picked up "Invisibl scratch piklz DJ Q-Bert v. A-Trak: Buck Tooth Wizads" today... one 62 minute track. comparing it to the koala tape is like apples to oranges, though. The Scratch happy land is more of actual songs constructed by the scratches samples and beats, while this is a BATTLE, as in two djs scratching each other insanly to the death with a couple beats. What i'm trying to say is that the Q-Bert stuff, which, don't get me wrong, is excellent, is based around the actual scratching as opposed to the more musical/beat oriented aspect of kid koala. I'll try to post a full review later, once i give it a better listen. btw, A-Trak is fifteen years old and he won the dmc world championships. oh and it's my birthday... yeah. Take some time to write up a few reviews when you've blown your holiday cash wads down at the local record retailer. If there's something that you've gotten that is just the bee's knees, then write up something. I'd sure like a list a lot more that discussed music instead of polling techniques. Buy Animals on Wheels "Designs and Mistakes" on Ninjatune. It is THE goods. Too bad I got it too to include it in my voting for the idm poll. Lastly, THANK YOU Chris for putting up with all the poll flack and still doing it. If you didn't send in your nominees, then shut up! Hmm, I think i'm going to sell mine. It's possibly the worst thing i've bought this year....there might have been perhaps just one track i liked on it...The rest, i dunno, just sounded like a mess to me. I thought i was going to like it, but i didn't in the end....just proves that i don't just go out and buy everything in a certain scene and pretend i like it just coz it gets discussed on this list :) -- Ben Coffer Hybrid Productions http://www.hybridgame.demon.co.uk/

You really need to take a further listen before you give this away. I'll admit, at first I didn't get much out of it either, but that's the beauty of it all. Some things are a little harder to digest at first take. Now, it's one of my favourites of this year. Diversity in every aspect of production. What's missing in this release that you don't hear? Just curious. Just a kind warning--Don't waste your money on buying Conmelt's "24 Carat" if you can't handle AOW. It's an even bigger mess. What a waste of time and money pressing this garbage. Can we get some melody here fellas? OK, maybe one track was alright, but as a whole, what a stinker of a release. i don't just go out and buy everything in a certain scene and pretend i like it just coz it gets discussed on this list either :-) ben Synaptic Records (Ben & Rick) 608 S. heh, I think I will defend conmelt. I respect your opinion and to you this cd may just suck. But I will relate my experience with it. I gave it a quick listen at the store and decided what the hell. I had no idea what to expect. I knew who they were because of their affiliation with Emissions Audio Output. Took it home and put the damn thing on. The whole listening experience was like exploratory surgery. No idea where they were going or what they would do next. They threw out all conventions. Hell who needs melody. The more I listened to it the more I liked it. It is all over the place, never complacent with a sound. The way the styles all mesh together is brilliant imho. They take chances where alot of artists don't. I would have to give it one of the better albums of the year. Lots of attitude and explorations on this one. Just my two cents worth. -dan
