Skinny Puppy? I've never heard anything by them before, I was always led to beleive they were more abrasive and industrial than what i prefer. Is this Download project similar to SP's sound? And are there any other projects beside Doubting Thomas I should check into? Thanks all...

Download III definetly sounds most like the doubting thomas era work ... also pick up plateau's music for grass bars ... its sorta like a warm up for download III ... which in my opinion is the best work mr key has had his name on since the doubting thomas stuff ... its very refreshing to see him not rely on a vocalist or someone else to cover his music (even doubting thomas leans on samples in the foreground too much) ... mr key is an incredible instrumentalist and a very accomplished sonic artist ... and his last 2 albums show that off beautifully m.

actually, they show that dwayne goettel and mr. valcic and are accomplished "sonic artists" (how fucking pretentious is THAT?) and that mr. key can accompany them well. - wells oliver : s0ewoliv@titan.vcu.edu "all these things we'll one day swallow whole and fade out again and fade out again"

No one seems to have given a very clear impression of what download is like so far! ;-) im hoping this is because its original type stuff.... someone told me it was vaguely like basic channel/porter ricks.. which sounds good... and someone else said it sounded like Autechre... which doesnt excite me tooo much.. so whats it like? good slices of noise? its good to see that people i used to listen to (godflesh, skinny puppy) are still up with the kids... Download is not unlike the Skinny Puppy sound, with similar structures, but moved a good distance toward techno/IDM. The new one has more of a techno/IDM sound than previous Download releases. Significant features of the sound are quick changes, interruptions, rhythms skewed to various degrees, multiple layers and different things flying at you relatively quickly. (Steve: more than one person has mentioned to me that the _Shifting Frame..._ tracks on the DAT [completed before Download's 1st I should mention], are similar to Download as far as -what- they do but not -how-.) --Mark __ <http://www.xnet.com/~mkolmar/BurningRome> < MPEG & RA audio clips > Forthcoming CD SENSELESS on Mindfield Records MINDCD03 Cathartium 14 m u s i c : w e b : s o u n d d e s i g n : h t m l : c g i : e t c "Computers are bringing about a situation that's like the invention of harmony. supposedly autechre has or is to be remixing download and the band is also trying to get the basic channel (or was it chain reaction) peoples to do remixing as well.

Here's a review from the latest issue of e.x.p. (issue 4) Download III (Subconcious Communications/Nettwerk) cEVIN Key's third installment of Download (aptly titled III) raises the listener from the holistic depths of his last album, The Eyes of Stanley Pain, only to drag the victim through territory not even the most fammished of canines has seen. Haunting sketch scapes, static storms, and tech-noir are still staple products here, but now dub basslines set things in motion. The end product can be vaguely described as being the Orb on a really bad trip. Considerably mellower than the previous releases, while steering clear of being clumped as techno, post-industrial or ambient, III leaves the tired dog of days past behind and takes a serious step forward. -t.S.o.G. it sounds nothing like autechre. it sounds vaguely (and I stress the word vaguely) like Last Rights era Skinny Puppy without the vocals or vocal samples. Heavy in the percussive elements (not to be mistaken with breakbeat or drum'n'bass), dark/broken sounds, & what sounds like layer upon layer of electronics. Personally, I like Download and I think Eyes of Stanely Pain is definetly worth checking out. It's probably the most overwhelming "bullet to the head" cEvin Key release to date. The first album "furnace" is ok. But it's a bit too muddy for me. anyways, hope this helps luke t.S.o.G.
