i think that anyone who thinks that electronic music can't be exciting to
watch
should check out the following performers:
matt herbert
laurie anderson
depeche mode
aphex twin (even tho he is reclined, he gives you something to focus
on with those goofy bears and the naked guy)
on the other hand, who says that music has to be interesting to watch
as well as to listen to. i think that the kiss ideals of a 'rock concert'
have been hammered into us for so long that we just accept them.
look at the covers of kiss alive and kiss alive II. they are carzy,
all sorts of blood and shit blowing up.
this is why when you go to any sort of crossover show (by this i mean
a band that is starting to get any sort of mainstream crowd(the orb comes
to mind) all you see is a bunch of kids standing around. the people
are so used to looking at the stage to see some sort of distraction
they lose sight of the fact that the music is truly the key element. it
is, after all the reason that you are there. when i see a live pa, i always
dance if i am into it. this is why the performer is there. anyone who makes
electronic music with beats is likely looking for people to be grooving
to their set. (i know you can argue that this isn't true but i'd bet that
autechre
would rather see a few hundred kids rump shaking than the same few
hundred kids 'spotting them while they play.) here, as an example are
a few live acts that i have seen that blew my skull but didn't have any
flash or shit blowing up:
plastikman-live at spastik (1994) this was the greatest experience of my
music listening life. scary, inspirational, mental!
orbital-just 2 guys and a bunch of machines but more inspiring than
20 rock concerts put together
kooky scientist-i've seen him twice and he rocked both times. one
guy twiddling knobs. not too visually stimulating, but who cares, i
was so into it i had my eyes closed. i was dancing so hard i didn't
want to get dizzy
autechre-they played in almost darkness. it still blew me away.
later,
peace, love and ambience.
