I reckon there's plenty of house music out there which fully deserves to be discussed here (hmm... deserves? Am I implying this list is worth aspiring to be dicussed on? Anyway...) I know that many people on this list have some sort of chip on their shoulder about "stupid" dance music but when you start dissing Mark&Tom GC for creating some of the most sublime house music money can buy... Well I dunno. House Music is the SOURCE. (hell there nothing like a recent convert is there :)

No, you can't just use the word house as an insult. I love 76:14 and PM as much as anyone and the way/the deep isn't really all that different in style and production values to these releases. Looks like someone just can't get past the 4/4 beat. If it had a break beat in it like much of 76:14 I bet you'd lap it up. Try the modwheel's (another GC alias for those that don't know mix of Espiritu's Man don't cry. Its house - with a break and is beautiful. To anti house types - may I suggest a remedial course of Herbert, Motorbass, DJ Sneak, Green Velvet, The ModWheel, PaperClip People (that's Carl Craig btw, technoheads), Super Discount and many more... And while I'm at it - stop looking down your noses at jump up jungle. All you drill'n'bassers take the new CD from Aprodite Recordings, or anything from Urban Takeover (especially Mickey Finn's Drop Top Caddy) stick it up your arse, and see how long you can sit still. Cheers, Andrew C.

Why is this not a forum for house music? You're talkin' to a grrrrrrrrrrrl born in bred in Chicago where Cajual, Derrick Carter, Frankie Knuckles, Mark Grant, Ralphi Rosario, Lil Louis, Larry Heard all left/leave their imprint. We were breakin' it down in '87 '88 at Fantasy (Lil Louis' club on south Michigan) and the original Warehouse with FK when you were still listening to Depeche Mode. Sorry, but there's some sublime, deep shit goin' on round these parts. IDM would have taken a completely different turn without House as an influencing factor. I will ALWAYS tip my hat to 4-on-the-floor thank you. BTW, don't you think Motorbass and alot of the French stuff that is coming out lately is majorly influenced by the Chicago trax sound??? As we say here, " I guess dey pissin on theyself den, ah-ight" Marie

Please, spare me the holier than thou history of house. I'm sure there are few people on this list who would deny the importance or influence of it on a lot of the artists discussed here. That doesn't mean though that they're lining up at the Tunnel on Saturday nights or petitioning for the return of the Paradise Garage. The points I miserably failed to make in my previous post were that a.) I think there is such a thing as good house music and b.) That The Way/The Deep doesn't fall into that category. I don't have too many house records, but almost all of them make me go 'Whoah, what the fuck...' as much as my more 'IDM' oriented collection. The Deep is like 11 minutes long and that beat sounds like it took, oh, one minute to conceive and program. That leaves 10 minutes for them to come up with that weak ass bassline, and drift some ambient-y GC synth patches over the top. Oh wait, don't forget the strings. And then for The Way, they drop the bassline, and add a booming kick, and some vocal sample about feelin' love. So that's what, 22 minutes of music that took five minutes to make? It probably took longer to cash the check. And you wonder why people diss house. As for discussing house here, well I think you'll find that the barometer lies somewhere between 'it sucks' and 'it's boring'. The most common complaint being that it's too repetitive. (In case you haven't noticed, a lot of the people on this list are just smitten with drum programming.) Occasionally a "can anyone recommend some good house compilations" thread pops up but I suspect most of those end up answered in private by folks who fear exposing their dirty little secret. Whatever. Personally I'd rather get my shake on to house, than to talk about it. But if you're the chatty type, be prepared for a lot of fan mail. -Christina

what is house anyway? didn't LFO ask that? and maybe the rephlex hardcore has tunnel vision, who bought 'the best of future sound records' on that label? or bothered to real the liner to ab3 - rephlex is a house music label!

exactly! it's just global communication! THESE PEOPLE READ TOO MANY MUSIC MAGAZINES, with their stupid categorisations.. 4/4 beat, it's house. distored 4/4 beat, it's 'techno', and the list goes on. i feel sorry for them because they have this massive chip on their shoulder, like you said, about anything that isn't cold, malevolent, nasty, or even remotely to do with having a good time.. yes it is your personal taste if you don't like it. i just don't understand why.
