I consider Emigre 29 well worth the steep price; if you can afford the $50
admission fee (plus shipping), and you want gobs of 86-94ish DR design
along with a captivating interview w/DR chief Ian Anderson and typical
tongue-in-cheek DR humor, I'd make the effort to obtain a copy
(www.emigre.com).
Sissy makes repeated appearances, and the 22x17 stock on which the
magazine is printed really does justice to their work. There's also lots
of iconic goodies to scan in and plagiarize, if you're willing to put your
copy through some abuse (not me, however).
I get the feeling from reading the magazine, though, that the interviewer
is less concerned about exploring DR design and motivation than to
establish his (or her) intellectual superiority. I guess that's what you
get with people who spend too much time in academia. It didn't matter too
much to me, however, since I was primarily after the art. I doubt I will
ever purchase another issue of Emigre, anyway, unless I get into the
publishing field.
If you're interested in typography (like I am), then you should visit the
emigre site, in any case. Nice fonts, and I've seen some of them used (to
good effect) in computer magazines such as Byte and PC Computing, as well
as television advertisements for large corporations.
