Noticed some things about the increasing profile of electronica in the mainstream. 1) I noticed in a Vibes record store that a CD was coming out next Tuesday which was called something like "MTV - Amp artists". Anyone have an idea who will be on it? 2) I also noticed in my daughter's CDHQ magazine (rather like Columbia House & BMG) that in the "alternative" section, there now is an "Electronica" section! 3) Chemical Brothers are to appear on the Jay Leno show next week. Actually, the third item is not true, but just wait a few months! Alec McKay

I got a postcard from awerks/caroline and they list Chemical Brothers Fluke Underworld The Future SOund of London Photek Aphex Twin Orbital Tranquility Bass Goldie Prodigy Josh Wink The Crystal Method Atari Teenage Riot I suspect that the tracks will be ones that actually have videos -- which would mean that the tracks would be: Setting Son/Born Slippy/We Have Explosive/?/On(?)/The Box/(?) Inner City Life/Firestarter/Higher State of Consciousness/(?) Somthing Godawful respectively. It is a great way for Astralwerks to make some cash to squander on up and coming artists, but I doubt that it will be anything an IDM lister will have trouble living without. Either you hae the original record the track came from or you hate the artist. That being said, there could be worse introductions to electronica. I'm waiting myself for them to hire DieselBoy to host "Yo! MTV Junga!" so he can mack like Eric on the Grind. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Kent Williams kent@inav.net -- http://soli.inav.net/~kent

Actually, according to the ads i've seen in this month's music papers, the AFX track on the Amp comp is going to be Girl Boy song. Give the comp some teeth, I suppose. grant.h.horne

This is out on 12" and it is way cool -- very dark minimal breaks. Some of photek's tracks are snoozers on the order of LTJ Bukem's more pedestrian output. This is another thing entirely. I heard this at a friend's house -- he said "I got the new Photek. It's not very good." So he played it for me and it knocked my socks off. THEN he plays some new bukem thing, and I needle dropped the whole damn record without finding anything but the same soupy jazz chords and the same break looped ad nauseum. He likes that one; to each his own I guess.

Good on you Alan, the other AMP. Did they name the show after you?
