SImon's far too worried about dogmatic compliance with genre standards. if you aren't a part of the scene or fail to follow the rules, like Plug or Squarepusher, then fuck you - you're diluting things, not broadening them. Tis a shame, really - I think Simon would have us listening to the Amen break until the next "big thing" catches his fancy. He has a way with words, but also has a bad case of "Critic's Disease", which tends to ruin it. Che

To be fair, you should have mentioned .../sr1.htm, which is his favorites from 1996. Puts things in quite a different perspective.

Hardly.
quoted 1 line Will you?> Will you?
Well, I'll try: Anybody who claims that FSOL "merely transferred the prog-rock notion of ostentatious virtuosity to sample-based music" while meanwhile praising Mokum-style Gabber (cf. sr1.htm) clearly has his head wedged a bit too far up his arse. He claims "Maybe Fabio and Grooverider did drop ``Bug In The Bassbin'' down at Rage, legendarily pitched up to 45 rpm - but the idea that the track was a seminal and formative influence on the nascent Jungle sound is preposterous." Well gee, I remember reading that Goldie said it was a seminal and formative influence. Now who am I gonna believe, somebody actually *making* the music and in the middle of it, or a journalist??? The fact that his favorites from '96 are 95% Drum n' Bass or Gabber (!) pretty much says it all, in my book. The problem with Reynolds - like most music journos - is that the music world is not Black or White, not Good or Bad. 12 years and 500,000+ postings about music to Usenet newsgroups and mailing lists that I've read has firmly disavowed me of that notion. Unfortunately it hasn't yet occured to Reynolds. I like FSOL. I like "Bug In The Bassbin". I like "Headz 2A"/"Headz 2B". No amount of blathering by Reynolds or anyone else is going to change this. Ultimately it's still a matter of taste and how your neurons fire in response to sonic input, and it's clear Reynolds' neurons fire differently than mine in some ways, and similarly in others. C'est la guerre ... Oh, and his Web site's crap (gee, nice background, shame you can't actually *read* anything unless you click-drag to highlight all the text with a sane background) and his "The Sex Revolts" book snippets are a hoot - a totally ridiculous topic (Genderification in Rock - yawn) in a field no one cares about anymore (Rock). Do I win? - Greg

Chris, I've got the Greg "Stryke" Chin EP called "Electronic Emotion", which is really good too -- nice melodic build-ups with some 303 thrown in as well -- plus it's on white vinyl! Can't beat that. What does the Shad T. Scott sound like? I'll be picking up that one soon. As far as I know Isophlux is based out of California (L.A. I think). Why write anything when I can just include someone else's words? Here's a post from nearly a year ago that got me searching for this record in the first place: ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- Date: Sun, 12 May 1996 23:44:50 -0600 (CST) From: Tamara Renee Ross <trr121@mail.usask.ca> To: idm@hyperreal.com Subject: (idm) Re: Isophlux label On Thu, 9 May 1996, Greg Earle wrote:

Here is what I got on it: Shad T. Scott EP ISOPHLUX (techno/triphop) Coming out of South Florida is S.T.S....Isophlux is his new label, starting with the first release being a 5-track EP of pure Aphex styled tracks. The first track called "Sand Pail" having a Warp-esque styled sound with stellar emotional string arrangements and electronic beats. The second track called "Orlando Feel" being a total Aphex Twin styled tune with weird sound sequencing backed up by string patterns. Flipside, track "Seven" that is just pure random acid notes being tweaked with resonance! "Phluphation" is a very dark metallic percussive song that sinks deep into your mind. Lastly, "Isophlux vs. Edward Bobb" is an ambient journey into spaced out minimalism, ending onto a locked groove. Sounds delish, huh? Dave at EAR/R is currently trying to find me as copy. I cannot wait. The Dean-O-Matic ---------- Forwarded Message ---------- That assessment is right-on. I'd have to add though that the song, "Phluphation", reminds me a lot of AUTECHRE, with their trademark metallic thunkings-along. Oh, and I've already added "Isophlux vs. Edward Bobb" to my list of songs that `scare the shit out of my cats for some strange reason' (right up there with "Virilio" by +N). ;} Anyway, I got mine at Synaptic if anyone wants to know. dahs. .`--). o o ._) christopher miller ==;' evil@digital.net ==' ' p.s. I've heard that SHAD T. SCOTT's coming out with a full-length on SIDE EFFECTS sometime soon. Yeeha.

No. Isophlux is out of Miami. But if you want a better label that's going places, you should check out Schematic Records. Also out of Miami. BTW, we have both of these labels releases in stock.
