Funny how everyone in the media seems to crib from : everyone else. Same list of suspect suspects held up as examples of : electronica, most of which I've never heard of, none of which I would : consider Techno or IDM. Underworld and Prodigy were there of course, but : where were Orbital, FSOL, Black Dog, Autechre, or even Aphex Twin, all of : which are available at most rekkid stores, and all of which have been : making electronica for at least five years? It reminds me of the late 80's, when Time, Newsweek, and various newspapers all did their articles about how "comic books aren't just for kids anymore" (this was during the period when Dark Knight, Watchmen, etc. were taking off). Every article began with the same sentence (paraphrased): "Zap, bang, pow! Comics are growing up!", followed by a roll call of the same comics, the same writers and and artists every time. A friend once said something that's stuck with me for years. He asked me, "What do you think of your daily newspaper? Do you think it's resonably accurate, informed, and unbiased?" I thought about it for a second, and said, "I suppose it's okay." He said "Think about the last article you read in that paper that concerned a topic you were an expert on. Do you still feel the same way?" -d.w. ps: I find it insulting (and quite predictable) that artists like Kraftwerk and Juan Atkins are _never_ mentioned in these articles. The Pat Boone-ization is already well underway.
