replace grunge?!?! Didn't grunge die out a few years ago?!?!? I don't think 'so-called' mainstream America is ready for "Electronica". America is STILL just too damm closed minded. My friends have no interest in IDM, but hell my friends that's a whole another story. On another weird note, Rolling Bones magazine listed FSOL's Dead Cities as one of their top albums of the year! How was "electronica" defined? If some form of electronigrunge were theorized as the NextBig(No)Thing, it's a plausible scenario. The resulting bombast will probably be as musically, artistically, and aesthetically valuable as most grunge, and will probably embody the same stylistic interchangability among "artists". The notable exception is the Autechre University of Found Sound. If, on the other hand, someone is suddenly predicting that Nambient (Namlookesque ambient) will suddenly hit the U.S. Top 40, it's quite doubtful. As for more danceable idm (an oxymoron?), anything is possible. 3

It was a misprint - I think "electronica" was supposed to be "Republica"... The day a top-40 station plays some real idm is the day Krzysztof eats his vinyl. Well let's look at it this way. Some groups and performers will become generally accepted by the mainstream audience Prodigy, Chemical Brothers (Sad but true) seem like they are headed this way. For example, Nine Inch Nails. I have on more than one occasion mentioned other bands that predated NIN in the industrial genre to some apparently hard core NIN fans. "What'z this Front 242? The sound like a ripoff of NIN. Uhhh they like suck or sumpthin'. Huh uh huh huh huh" MAYBE they will have heard of Ministry, or even possibly Nitzer Ebb. I am no real autority on Industrial (or music in general :) ), but I present it merely as an example. I think the same will be true of this latest "trend". Just a thought, Eric

What about the Smiths stealing that guitar rhythm from "No Hippychicks"?

Where did anyone get the idea that "electronica" was synonymous with IDM. Surely American radio isn't going to start spinning arhythmic stuff like squarepusher et al, but theres a lot of "rave" type stuff that would play well. Americans loved Stock, Aiken and Waterman and even early coldcut offshoots like Yaz and Lisa Stansfield, so maybe this is just another round of boogie fever. ...and already has! Tune your radio into the local pop station and you're bound to hear rave-style tunes all over the radio. In fact, for the past two years, it seems like this generic synth stuff has plastered the airwaves (alongside of grunge). What I'm hearing these days, however, are more IDM-ish *elements* creeping into the music. That's not to say that IDM will overtake masses, but that more creative sounds and rhythms are slowly filtering into the pop mainstream. Tim

I can't see the arhythmic stuff being played a lot either but I see a lot more of the IDM-elements creeping in as well. BUT I don't hear them on the radio....I see them on Much Music (in a very limited way). The Chris Shepard-style tunes have always been represented on top 40 radio, crap clubs, wedding socials, etc. The problem will be distancing IDM from cheesy "dance" tunes and presenting electronic music as a _legitimate_ form of music. I tuned into modern rock live (I think it's a national radio show) the other night and they played an orbital tune followed by the chemical brothers. Seeing as how this was played on the alternative rock station around here and modern rock live usually plays alterno-rock-stuff, I'd have to agree with you. Too late! The local Blockbuster Music (I only shop there for the $10 Criterion Collection laserdiscs :-) just started a big new "Dance" section with Underworld and Black Dog right in there with Los Del Body-Of-Water and a half-million "Hot Rave '97" compilations.
