If my memory serves me well, Gift was active around 1992-93. Again, trying to
remember off the top of my head, they released stuff by local bands V, Newspeak,
Various Vegetables and, of course, Pulp.
I've never heard owt by the first 3 bands, but the 3 Pulp singles they released
('O.U.', 'Babies' and 'Razzmatazz') are among my all-time favourites. Although
Gift now appears to be sleeping, if not dead, they deserve big shouts for
releasing these gems and playing a part in getting Pulp signed to Island where
they've gone on to become spangly-future-pop-disco megastars.
Jarvis Cocker's played his part in Warp history too, having directed an Aphex
Twin vid ('On' I think).
Without Gift, he'd probably never have been in a position to waggle his arse at
Michael Jackson. I can no longer imagine a world without him. Want to know what
being a teenager in eighties Sheffield was all about? Probably not, but on the
off-chance that you've always wondered, listen to Pulp.
Ta Gift.
Damon.
