I interviewed CJ a couple of weeks ago, and we discussed the contracts in depth. Basically, when he decided to leave R&S, the contract meant that Renaat still had the right to his next five tracks. So he recorded five new tracks for the album, and the rest (such as Neural Paradox, which he recorded when he was 17!) was collected from the unreleased archives. However, he is now completely detached from R&S and signed exclusively as 'CJ Bolland' to Internal, and we should see a new LP around February 96... see ya _________________________________________________ tom churchill e-mail: tom@chrchfam.demon.co.uk electronic musician/reviewer/dj _________________________________________________

Yep. Signed to Orbital's label, this is Bolland's first album since last year's "Electronic Highway" on R&S Records. And the verdict? So far, it's quite interesting. The last track, "Sugar is Sweeter" features vocals by Jade 4 U from the Lords of Acid, and sounds quite industrial. Other tracks are harder than hardcore, and the remaining few sound way too much like digital Chemical Brothers (slow breaks, repetitive loops of sound, cheese). My favorite is definitely the opening track, which viciously steals an Art of Noise drumloop from "Close (To the Edit)" and practically smothers it with layers of euphonious, hands in the air, keyboard melodies. There' some humour ("There Can Only Be One" features extensive sampling from The Highlander) and trendy sampling (are television evangelists getting back into techno again?) In all, the album feels pretty good. So far I'd rate it a nice 8/10, but I've only had it for 9 hours. I still want to let it sink in. I picked up CJ Bolland's "The Analogue Theatre" (Internal), and it continues in the same vein as "Electronic Highway". Long gone are the tribal beats that permeated "The 4th Sign", and in place are light trance melodies and smooth toe tappers. "Sugar Is Sweeter" sounds out of place with Jade 4 U's vocals, and would have been better of as a seperate single. Paul Rafanello intone@warwick.net
