It's actually a lot longer & it's not by Juan Atkins, Manuel Gottsching is the guy's actual name, some German avant garde geezah. If you've ever hear Sueno Latino then you've basically heard this, as SL ripped this off just adding some Italian house diva orgasmic groaning and an extra bass beat. The tune is 45 minutes long roughly, and the second side unwisely (IMO) adds a little bit of guitar wankery. It's still a good record though, kinda like a bridge between Steve Reich and Chicago house. It's not too hard to get hold of second hand, at least in the UK, and I think its been reissued several times as the copy I've got is dated '91. Anyone out there got the new Faultline album? np. autechre - cichli

(manuel gottsching was also doing stuff under a different name... i seem to remember seeing a box set with him and klause shulze {sp?} dont remember that other name tho...) .oO(}{). E2-E4 is probably his best, but there are a couple of other excellent Gottsching records, most of which were done under his two guises, Ashra and Ash Ra Tempel. The early records (all Ash Ra Tempel) are bluesy kraut-psych and very erratic, but he got into a great groove during the mid-'70s with New Age of Earth (my personal favorite) and Blackouts (both under Ashra). Both are quite similar to E2-E4, very ambient and flowing, a much better use of guitar-wank for atmospheric effect than Steve Hillage ever managed... There are reviews and such at http://allmusic.com/.

Schulze appeared on one of the early Ash Ra Tempel LPs, I think it was Join Inn... .John.

Inn... Schulze was a founding member of Ash Ra Tempel - i think it's an offshoot of his previous group, Psy Free. he served as drummer and all-around-electronics-dude during early gigs and on the first (and best) A.R.T. album (s/t) - check side 2 ("Traummaschine" - pure Schulze!) - but left before Schwingungen (LP2). he definitely wasn't around as late as Join Inn (LP4) mr. e now on: abdelah ghania: invocation (baraka)

Join Inn did indeed feature Schulze- apparently Gottsching met up with Schulze when they were recording Walter Wegmuller's mighty _Tarot_ and this prompted some sort of studio reunion later. Never heard of Psy Free, though it should be noted that Ash Ra Tempel was previously known as the Steeplechase Blues Band (then, as always, under Gottsching's leadership) and changed their name (and sound) when Klaus joined up. Hopefully everybody here is also aware that Schulze was famously previously in Tangerine Dream (on board for one stupendous freakout album, _Electronic Meditation_). A previous poster, in reference to a Gottsching/Schulze box might have been a bit confused (or is more on top of things than I am, which admittedly isn't that hard to accomplish). There have been numerous Schulze sets released (one a 20+ CD monster), as well as a Gottsching/Ash Ra Tempel 6 CD set, entitled _Private Tapes_. A distillation of the latter was released by Cleopatra as a 2CD, focusing on the later, analog synth stuff. Which, I will grant you is pretty smoove, but not quite up to the brain-bombing level of some of the earlier material that the original set displayed (35 minute jam w/original line up? _and it delivers_... nuff said). No Schulze/Gottsching box was ever released per se, though of course Klaus shows up in his usual role in the ART band material. -rob
