There's a series of stories (nearly 10 pages), under the banner _Drums and Wires_. They seem quite concerned about what it will take to make electronica mainstream in the Yoo Ess Ayyy. They vote for glitzy stage shows and vocals, of course... Which issue? I just got the one with that annoying american talk show host on the cover, and I don't recall any squarepusher/plug coverage. why not? Skinny puppy isn't the epitome of "uncharted". Their story has been told countless times, even before the last album came out. I fail to see the uniqueness of such an article.

Just had a look at this in Tower, damn you're right. There's little paragraph profiles of Photek, Squarepusher, and a massive review of Organic. Damn what's going on this month? Why does this matter? If our music gets mass exposure in the U.S. it is not likely to change anything except the number of subscribers to this list. I hear it's all pop over in Europe anyway. I cannot wait for the new Aphex album if RDJ really sings pop songs. Now THAT'S experimental electronic music for you. I'm serious. I like my music. I do not need to know that other's like it too in order to feel good about myself.

It doesn't matter at all really. I just find it interesting and amusing that IDM is starting to get a tiny trickle of mainstream press at the moment. Please lets not start another huge thread about this debating the merits of keeping music underground and....never mind, I don't even want to give anyone any ideas :) ! I just pointed it out so people who are interested in reading these articles could have a look for themselves. BTW, many thanks to Arjun for translating the Bochum Welt interview. What!? Kraftwerk were singing on the majority of their releases... it's nothing new. How about the Lidia Husk (sp?) and Beaumont Hannat collaborations? He's just bring the music inline with the pop asthetic... what will be interesting is how it will be received, and basically that depends on his music (no worries :) and his singing voice (only time will tell :).

It all started out with the human voice and it will always find its way back. A few artists are ahead of the trend here -- too many to list. You might want to look into the last 2 Underworld albums, for example. A lot of discussion has been about their remixes, but I think the albums are the core of their material. I received my copy of the Boy/Girl single yesterday, and I felt necessary to clear up a few things about this vocal thing. While Richard has certainly taken a flying leap in the drum'n bass genre by adding 60's slacker lyrics (the comparison to Syd Barrett is dead on) his writing process is still the same. There are three lyrics to the boy/girl song: "I wish the milkman would deliver my milk in the morning" "I wish the milkman would deliver my milk when I'm yawning" "I would like some milk from the milkmans wife's tits". He's quite obviously sampled these three sentences, and then encorporates them into a rather clonky drum'n bass rhythm (polygon window meets squarepusher). Towards the end of the track, he gradually processes the lyrics until they're practically indecipherable. Mind you, by then yer sick of it anyways. It's cute...but not exactly your standard top of the pops success story. In the meantime, I guess Richard won the bet. :) Richard also sings on "beatles under my carpet." Something like "Bee-tles...uuunder my caarpet, under my feeet. They come out in the heat." Actually, I'm not sure but I think "Aria with Fontana Mix" was earlier than Cage's "Indeterminacy" piece(s) :) so this might be the "1st", and obviously, Aria is w/voice. I know that, it's just that it is about the last thing one would expect an artist with the past output of AFX, working in this particular type of a modern Rephlex-techno medium, et cetera, to do. It seems that RDJ is pushing yet another frontier, "bastardising his sound", if you will, to pop music. On one hand, it is his own frontier he is pushing, not frontiers in general. The music I am certain will sound like nothing else that has been done before, true, but it will moreso sound like something one would never expect AFX to do. That is to say he is not doing something that has never been done before by anyone else, since as you say Kraftwerk did it years ago, but he is creating something new by doing such a thing in a new way. Such was the case with his Selected Ambient Works 2 record. It was basically a Brian Eno record, but it was a Brian Eno record that only AFX could have made, and on top of this it was the last thing anyone would have expected AFX to ever make. It did push boundaries, it was something that had never been done before, and yet it wasn't. It was original and unoriginal simultaneously, but at the very least it was completely unexpected. This is why I like AFX in the first place, of course. I can't wait to hear this new record of his.... I am sure that, if anything, it will be... wierd. Have a wonderful evening everyone.
