I have a good idea of what drum and bass is. (Any of the tunes released on Metalheadz would qualify to keep it simple.) People here keep mentioning intellijungle, intelligent jungle and intelligent drum & bass. Some say that Squarepusher is intelligent drum and bass. Recently someone mentioned that both Photek and Plug are intellijungle. Some even say that Hangable auto bulb is intelligent jungle (Cause RDJ made it). Could you please explain what you think the differences are between drum and bass and the above mentioned genres. Thank you, Daniel Roshoff <e95_dro@elixir.e.kth.se>

To me the difference between 'run of the mill' D&B/jungle and people like Squarepusher, Photek, JOS, Aphex's breaky stuff etc. is the same thing that separates IDM from crappy house/techno:attention to detail. Most bland jungle I've heard is really annoying-the same drum loop over and over (of course at a fast tempo) with anything from weak ass jazz bars underneath to post-rave wierd but lame noises on top. Very prdeictable, and monotonous. Sometimes there is the diva/electric piano garbage too. For me, often it's tough to distinguish this type of music from hardcore crappy rave stuff. Good 'experimental D&B/jungle' (I have a hard time even calling the good stuff these terms) is IMHO truly groundbreaking. I haven't heard anything as unique as Squarepusher's LP in a long time. It's straight up chilled out jazz (not just some jazz samples) with the most tweaked breaks with some aphex type distortion thrown in. Photek's minimal melodies along with the cymbal programming is very cool. JOS's etheral peaceful jazz over top some solid drum programming is my definition of smooth. Aphex's wackiness is well...Aphex. For some reason, this guy can get away with almost anything, and I love it. I can't wait to hear is new LP. Oh yeah, just a note, Orbital's 'Times Fly' (fast) is their take (and a very good one) on the whole D&B scene. Anyway, to sum it up, I think you will agree upon buying any of those mediocre jungle comps and then any 'intellijungle' there is generally a greater degree of innovation and creativity with the latter records. Errr...somehow I seem to think that the dividing line between intellegent jungle and non on the list is that intellegent is made primarily by white (with a few exceptions) people and non is made primarily by black. Me, i'd just as soon listen to jungle on some pirate station with Mc's all the way through with lots of gunshots and gangster shit as I would listen to photek. I was sort of shocked to find that a good amount of the jungle producers [that I listen to] are white. Racial bias just led me to assume that the genre is dominated by blacks. I was reading an article about jungle in some music paper this summer and was surprised to see all these goofy looking white guys. One prominent one [Wax Doctor, I think] looks like Dean Ween of all people.
