From my own experience I've found there are a few groups of people that buy this music we're into: 1. DJ's - who generally don't give a shit who made the record or what label its on. They just grab every new release and bring it to the tables and buy what they think will move the crowd. 2. Ravers/Clubers - who don't know ANYTHING about artists, labels, or sometimes even types of music. They generally buy only mix-tapes or keoki cds. 3. IDMers - who know every label, every artist, every music machine, and are quite content to spend most of their waking lives tracking down obscure records and every last single note by their favorite artists. /""'' /"'RESH Live and Direct from the G-Spot Orange County, California, USA

I suffer greatly from the trainspotter disease, having just bought 'Apollo 2: the divine compilation' for the live version of Locust's "i feel cold inside because of the things you say" ... (okay, there are are few other excellent tracks on the 2-cd, but that's not /why/ I got it) The list is endless ... Fortunately (for my bank balance) I tend to find a fair bit in the sales section of mainstream record stores. To make you all absolutely sick: 2 months ago I found Reload's Collection of Short Stories for dfl.10 (I paid the 'normal' price of dfl.40 for my first copy - approx 25 US). I tried to order more, but to no avail. greets, Helen

Oooops!!! This message was meant to go here but I sent it to UK-Dance by accident!!! ---------------------------------------------------------------- Hey y'alls, I was reading the latest UK-Dance digest (1516) and something funny caught my eye:

Agreed!

This had me giggling for some time...It's amazing to realize that all this time, we've been under the microscope...

Thoughts on this? I hadn't really thought about this before...when I think of Techno. I really haven't thought about the fact that the IDM vibe is the most "underground"...Life's strange sometimes...This is a perfect example of why I can't fully grasp the genre-wars. I always tend to assume that anybody who likes techno likes ALL forms of it as long as the particular track is well done (BTW, I consider ambient to be a form of techno in that it is usually electronic). I think I'm perhaps being way to fucking naive, but I tend to assume that all lovers of techno exhibit heightened thinking patterns and sees the music as way more than music. I guess in an infinite universe, there exists the possiblity that to some, techno is just about a cool song with a funky beat...

ROFL!!! :) Apparently, we're the geeks of Techno...quite an auspicious title...! Peace out, The Dragon Reborn -------------------------------------------------------- "You have to burn in order to shine." - Coil --------------------------------------------------------

Since I started that thread I guess I'll have to follow up. I did it for a laugh. It's fun and the whole family can play. I don't see it as sad.

You have to put that into the UK context. Jungle, House, and Techno are mainstream youth culture. It's dance music. Sad to say, a lot of IDM (I'm really beginning to hate that tag) isn't particularly danceable, or doesn't fit into a dj format. So clubland ignores it. Actually I started out listening to more ambient dreamy stuff, and any more it's gotta have some kick to it. In fact the first AFX I bought was 'Quoth' and I remember being frankly horrified by it. Now it's beauty to me.

Genre wars are always more about kids taking their identities from their scenes than about music. Once you are old enough to know who you are independent of whose tour TShirt you happen to be wearing, it seems really really silly and immature.

Sad, but true in my social circles. Friends who are also into idm live miles away, those nearest to me hate it and think I've gone stark ravin' mad. Something else they cannot understand is that I keep buying records. 'haven't you got enough to listen to yet?' erhmmmm ....

Great. I love being thought of as a geek. Helen
