Australian Aborigines (along with many other people probably:) use a technique known as cyclic breathing whereby air is inhaled through the nose whilst simultaneously being exhaled through the mouth! try that as a party trick! matt - / -____ | | ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ aerial <mthomas@arts.adelaide.edu.au>

To be precise you push air with your cheeks while breathing with your nose. A bit like trumpet players. Circular breathing is not easy to do, and even if you can do it does not mean you can do it forever. I made myself a didj and i get exhausted after a short while. Some players (there are bands and all with tuned didj) can go on for hours! In the digital domain i've had mixed results doing a didj with csound, while with analog gear i've had very interesting results with a Sequential circuits six-trak. In the case of Mr. Aphex, he used a real didj sample modulated with an analog filter (with a Sequential Circuit Studio 440).
