i've just had a thought, actually copyright doesn't exist as law in some countries, there's no such thing as world copyright....usually countries with an un-established legal system, if you bootlegged in one of these countries, although i doubt whether they have CD factories or Vinyl presses, then it'd not illegal. It'll be illegal to import the bootleg, but not to actually do it. If however you bought a bootleg in one of these countries and brought it back to UK/USA fpr personal listening pleasure, i'm not sure if that's illegal. Nick...

Isn't Italy one of the countries with less restrictive bootleg laws? I know they are a major source of bootleg releases and I have been told by more than one person the copyright laws with regard to producing bootleg material there are very loose. (Or maybe they have been in the past...not sure what the current situation is). Tony

I don't know about the laws themselves (but laws don't count that much here anyway :), but I surely never found a bootlegged CD for sale in a store. What you're probably referring to is the "Rent-a-CD" phenomenon -- you can basically rent a CD for $2 or so for a coupla days. When renting was outlawed, all those Renting stores changed policy, and instead of letting you borrow a CD for 2 days for $2, they will sell it to you for $20 and then buy it back 2 days later for $18. They were; they recently changed their laws under international pressure, though. (They give much less copyright protection on live performances than most international copyright conventions prefer, hence the many many grey-market live discs out of Italy over the past few years.) Are you sure about that? Quite a few years ago there were lots of pirate copies of LP's by Throbbing Gristle and 23 Skidoo that were produced in Italy. Really *blatant* pirate editions of standard issue LP's such as "3rd Annual report" etc.(not live Lp's) produced by Base Records. The word going around at the time was that TG couldn't do anything about it because of the laws in Italy at that time with respect to bootlegs. Of course the situation could very well have changed since that time. Tony
