Sounds like fighting talk :) Funny, I thought the total opposite ;) Seriously, I was disappointed with this compared to the majority of the D&B crossovers we're getting. Jon Burrell OnNow: Being - SE006

Well, aside from TPower, and Jacob's Optical Staircase, who else is really 'out there'? I'm all ears. And I do think I'll pass on the Marvelous Cain disk. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Home Page: http://I.m.too.dumb.to.hack.html/~kent Kent Williams kent@inav.net (319) 338 6053 (home) (319) 626 6700 x 219 (work) (319) 626 3489 (fax)

Spring Heel Jack Luke Vibert (plug) Chameleon (Global Comm.) Kushti (Freestyle EP) - Black dog related? Joe Nation (Zvona EP) Plaid All the above have created stunning drum-n-bass material, not "straight up" and not originating from within the drum-n-bass scene. PS. I'm on the side in favour of "Homebrew" J ^ __________ ________.__/_____ _||_/ James Skilton aka Steady J _[]/_____________[.__\____-_ DJ and Party Animal | | Part Time Hedonist |____________________________| Full Time Technohead |__|-' '-|__| Steady-J@Firefox.co.uk

A Guy Called Gerald - Black Secret Technology. Beautiful album (best of the year for me). Polyrythmic, layered beats, crossing all boundaries. Check out "Anita's Dream" for certifiable proof of genius at work. Subtropic does'nt even come close to this kind of sound (and I like the Subtropic album) sashainboston

I recall his debut album from... 87? Black Lemonade I think. Definitely some sound before his time, or at least, before his time in the stream it was picked in. Voodoo Ray had an almost dada-esque quality about it. Perhaps genius, certainly original. Elmer

I think you mean Automanikk (sp?), which came out in 88 or 89. "Hot Lemonade" was a subsequent single I believe. "Voodoo Ray" came before the LP and is indeed a defining track in the history of house/techno - one of the first (if not _the_ first) UK tracks which really sounded right IMO, and one which stands the test of time, hence its inclusion on the excellent "Flux Trax" comp, for instance. When I say "sounded right", what I mean is: at the time a lot of UK "house" had a really dull juddery feel to it - lacking the flow of the US stuff from (principally) Chicago and Detroit. Either that or samplathons with blatant Todd Terry rip-off beats. Voodoo Ray took what sounded to me at the time to be primarily Detroit influences in the main track and twisted that round to sound completely unique. Gerald was a member of the original line-up of 808 state, and co-wrote "Pacific State", which they released after his departure. I saw him play live in Lancaster UK when I was at university, in 89 I think, and he played a storming version of that track in his set. I once passed over a copy of his "28 gun bad boy" LP, on vinyl no less. Very rare I believe. But the shop wouln't let me hear it and I was feeling less than flush at the time. Anyone know this record?
