Mike had his day back in 1993 when tango 'n' vectif came out. What a great album that was...... the rest of his material though sounds like painful self-mockery. Jega too had his day.... first 12" on Skam to be precise. Everything else I've heard from him though has been less than brilliant.... Who else exactly should I be so proud of on the Planet Mu roster? I personally think that the Involve label should be worth following based on the strength of Aspen's last album. Also, the Context and Toshoklabs labels are definitely up there in terms of putting out well-rounded IDM tracks in the last year. I'm also hoping that Warp, Schematic, and Musik Aus Strom get out of their slumps and start putting out decent material again. In the meantime, I will continue listening to EBE (his new 12" on Soma is solid), Circulation, The Timewriter, John Selway, Tom Churchill, and more until IDM artists return to putting out listenable material. BTW: I think Mixmaster Morris's quote about Fax Records back in the day (Fax Records is like ambient crack) relates quite effectively to current IDM.... it is fun to hear in the shops, but once you get home it bores quickly.... everything these days is so gimmick-y. did you forget Bluff Limbo? In Pine Effect? Two of the most classic albums released...ever. without wishing to sound too much like an arse-kiss, Mike P walks on water as far as I'm concerned...musically anyway. Can't see how you can dismiss the rest of his stuff that easily.

semi agree on this point, it's a good ep but far from his best.

brilliant.... what is it with slagging off Jega? Everyone seems to have him down as merely an imitator, even after Spectrum. Admit it, that was (is) an amazing album.

no need to be proud, but considering there are forthcoming records from Capitol k, Kid Spatula, Luke Vibert and the whole remix thing of Slag Boom Van Loon (it's got 2 BOC mixes for f**k's sake, what more do you idm only freaks want?) my point that Planet Mu is going to be massive in 2000 is very very valid. just enjoy it? gv ----- Original Message ----- From: Aaron S Michelson <asm2+@andrew.cmu.edu> To: <idm@hyperreal.org>; ..: .: : .:. <a_b_possibly_c@hotmail.com> Sent: 29 January 2000 22:24 Subject: Re: (idm) label of the year....

I think Planet Mu might be big for those who feel that Squarepusher, Mu-Ziq and uptempo RDJ didn't properly hollow out the wacky, skittering drum segment of IDM in 1995. While it would be hard to say that a lot of the early and mid-period Squarepusher and Mu-Ziq stuff isn't phenomenal, there isn't a lot you can do with this sound, and there certainly isn't much you can do with it as well as "Hard Normal Daddy" or "Hangable Auto Bulb" or "Bluff Limbo" did. It just seems to me there is so much more worthwhile material coming out in other genres that to spend time focusing on Planet Mu is a waste of money. I haven't really liked anything on that label in some time. And to keep this an informative post, here are some of the new things I'd recommend: * Airbag 12" (Out to Lunch) * Landshipping: Sleep Hath Arrested Us 7" (Liquefaction) * Blaze: Productions 2LP (Playhouse) * Arovane: Atol Scrap CD (Arovane/Chain Reaction) * DAT Politics: Tracto Flirt LP (Skipp) * Exos: Eleventh CD (Thule) * Pluramon: Remixes 12" (Mille Plateaux) * Schlammpeitziger: Restwassrestgeibetel 7" (A-Musik) Matt --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
