Kind of an odd question for you all in the New York City area. My parents are going on a holiday for a week or so and i asked them to buy some CD's. Now, what i'm looking for is a parent-friendly record shop (on Manhattan) where my folks can leave it to the clerk. So they'll be bringing a little list of what i want (they don't know where to look, believe me) and the clerk just piles these up for them. What i'm looking for is something like: The first AI CD, I Care because..., (both domestic off course), Tango'N'Vectif, The new Woob album on Emit (4495) and maybe some other stuff i can't think of right now. CD's are about twice as expensive over here in Holland, so you can see my motive. So if you know a nice shop please mail me (personally) and could you give me an indication how much the above CD's will cost me (seperately) Thanks, Collin c.e.oosterbaan@twi.tudelft.nl

...when i lived in NY i used to frequently visit these two stores... ...Rebel Rebel records in the village and Kim's Records and Video: Rebel Rebel 319 Bleecker ST. NYC 10014 (212) 989-0770 (call them and ask for directions from teh subway) they're tiny (only one small room(, but the sales guy knows all the CDs in stock by memory, all you gotta do is show him the list and he'll get it... also, down the block there's Kim's Records and Video, with a little larger selection and bigger store- that's also the only place i know where you can get Zoviet France CDs- to get there, walk across the street from rebel rebel- then (with rebel rebel at your back) walk one or two blocks right, and you're there- you can't miss it, there'll be a big 'New York's only alternative' sign- anyone else know of any other good stores in NY, especially the one that deal exclusively with electronic music? from a rustic -<J> 'hmmm' <G>

Try Liquid Sky Music (sorry don't have a clue on the address, although I rememeber seeing it once in URB - that narrows it down doesn't it). I gave a friend a list when he went to New York. Evidently, he just gave the list to the guy working at Liquid Sky and he gathered up everything on the list that they had in stock. You can't ask for better service than that. They had some really hard to find stuff too. MC

I don't know about record stores, but you might be able to work out a relationship with earrational records to order american domestic stuff. Drop dave at angst@xmission.com a line. Basically you'd pay more than we do for postage, and have to arrange an international wire transfer, so it would be better for big orders, but I think you could still save money. Unless of course the Dutch Post Office & Customs go out of their way to make this expensive and difficult. -- ---- kent.williams@cadsi.com [Kent Williams/CADSI/2651 Crosspark Rd/Coralville IA 52241/(319)626-6700] "Here is our family's history in a nutshell: 1850-1957: terribly hard times, many adventures, charming stories. 1957-present: watch Matlock, complain about grandchildren." - Ian Williams

for IDM type stuff STRANGE? is your best bet. it's on 9th street and Avenue A. the owner's name is Colin. he's very nice and helpful on a good day. a lot of the "DJ owned" rekkid sto's (satellite, sonic groove, liquid sky) tend to have an intimidating/pretentious atmosphere. not good for your folks. Strange? specializes in IDM type music. he has lots of CD's and some vinyl. REBEL REBEL is also a very good untapped resource. very parent friendly. Also THROB on 14th and 3rd Avenue. i live in the east village, and while i do go to Liquid Sky and Satellite i tend to spend more time (and money) at the above stores. they're not as "trendy or cool" but because they're not as crowded they usually have what i want, and i like the people who work at these stores.
