1) Is the Air Liquide double disc on sm:)e a compilation of previously released stuff, all new material, or some combonation? Until I picked it up a few weeks ago, I was pretty unfamilar with AL, but I dig it lots. 2) I got a promo copy of the double Hardkiss disc at the Chart (a national Canadian music mag that I write a monthly electronic/experimental column for), and I wanna mention it in my next column. However, I'm a bit confused - is Hardkiss a person/project, the name of the comp, or the name of the label? I know that Scott(?) Hardkiss is credited as being involved in at least producing/mixing some of the stuff, and there are other folks involved, but... well, it's just a bit confusing. If someone could straighten me out, I'd appriciate it muchly... Thanks, Greg gclow@octrf.on.ca

Which one? There's several on sm:)e. I think they're all new material (or were at the time of release, anyway)... See ya Tom Churchill E-mail: tom@chrchfam.demon.co.uk Electronic DJ and musician

Hardkiss is a pseudonym for Jon Drukman. (asking for trouble)

the Hardkiss Brothers (who are not really brothers) are Gavin Hardkiss, Scott Hardkiss and Robbie Hardkiss. The label is Hardkiss Music i believe. Jon Drukman can give you the straight dope on who made what. mikebee

Sorry. I thought somebody else might pipe in.

Air Liquide are Jammin' Unit and Walker from Germany (Can Oral and Ingmar _hmm I forget his last name is it Koch?_ respectively). Ingmar has been the man behind a slew of VERY interesting labels from Germany including Structure, DJungle Fever, Blue (the original home of Air Liquide), and the newer Mille Plateau (among many others). I believe that Can has since left Air Liquide (I know that he now lives in Berlin). Cem's brother (I've heard they are related), Kahn, runs a record store in New York and also records often with Ingmar (Walker). To directly answer your question, I would guess yes. Most of the Sm:)e releases are licensed, previously released material. Most of these original releases are very hard to find though. I know that there was an Air Liquide release on Rising High that also was licensed to Sm:)e. I'm pretty sure there are a couple of Air Liquide releases on Sm:)e. I have the Mercury EP and Robot Wars as well as another double 10" with a dragonfly or something on it (I forget the name). I also have a couple of limited pressings of Air Liquide on Blue. They have tons of shit out. Keep a look out and I'm sure you'll find something.

Hardkiss was a party that sprang up in San Francisco in the early days of the scene here. All of the DJ's a promoters involved tack Hardkiss on the end of their name (like Scott Hardkiss in this case). There's Gavin, Scott and Robbie that I can remember from heart. They started a label together called Hardkiss Music. All of the original releases were pretty much written and produced by our list friend Jon Drukman and another chap Jeff Taylor. Because of bitter tension from miscrediting the releases, the Hardkisses and the Ultraviolet crew (I like to affectionatley call them) split forces and now Hardkiss are on their own. IMO the best Hardkiss tracks are the early ones including: Ultraviolet Catastrophe - The Trip Hawke - 3 Nudes In A Purlpe Garden God Within (not a good as the previous two) If you're like me then you'll like Deluxe. This is material written and produced by Jeff Taylor. There's a full length and some singles remixed by the likes of Freaky Chakra and Young American Primitive all on Ultraviolet Recordings. Also check out the Bass Kittens single (written by Jon of course) for some more good funky electronic stuff. If you'd like to talk with either Hardkiss Music or Ultraviolet Recordings you can call information in San Francisco. -robert --> __ _ _ _____ _____ _____ / _\ | || || _ \|_ _|/ _ \ / /_\\ | -- || |_) | _| |_ | (_) | ______________ /______\\____/|_____/|_____|\_____/ ( *electronic* )

actually the freaky chakra remix hasn't been released yet... shame, cos it's really good. jeff did a track with one of the guys from Skylab... it's on Trance Europe Express 4... unfortunately they edited it really severely (the original was 14 mins long).

Not to jump on the Drukman/Hatfield == Ashdown/McCoy thing, but there IS a pretty good writeup on the "brothers" HArdkiss in the TranceAtlantic booklet. gawd, those books are almost as cool as the volume disks. TEEX4 is superb, with a trip-hop & jungle flavor unheard of on any of the prior TEEX releases. The LFO track is gorgeous, marking a new direction that makes me very anxious for the new full length: greggie????? Vulva are as good and quirky as ever. The Ifach/Pure Plastic Rue East and Solcyc are good bass driven acid. The Chem Brothers/Charlatans lives up to the hype. The Rootless track is a trip-hop cool breeze that left me wondering why I haven't heard of these guys B4. Th Depth Charge fuck fest is horny as all and Ms. DJaxx lays down the simple crunchy acid. I never knew Bytesize Nuns were almost the Orb; the track doesn't really show it. BTW, the bonus 4 tracker with the Akasha , Octagon Man, DJ Food and the extra track by A Guy Called Gerald is a sweet bonus desert. Volume's never failed to satisfy me yet.... peeeeeeeece, Jeff Davis ____--~~~~~~vvvv~~~~ oooooo 812.831.7846 jjdavis@xnet.com____---- ( ( ( vvvv ~~~~~~ooooooooooooo ___----( ( \ \ \ \ \ vvv oooooooooooooooooooooooooo ____---- ( \ \ \ \ \ \ \ \ http://www.xnet.com/~jjdavis/
