IDM Poll 1994 Results --------------------- Firstly, thanks to the forty or so of you who voted. I had hoped for more but I think this was a big enough response to get some valid results. I think your votes confirm that we've had an interesting year. The idm scene is pretty healthy with music featuring releases that have been in some cases retrospective, in others maturing and in some genuinely groundbreaking. One nice thing about the poll is the global nature with roughly half the votes originating from the USA, one from Canada, two from Australia and the rest from Europe (UK, Finland, Netherlands, Norway). The top results follow. Over the holidays I'll type out the the full details and arrange to make them available. In the meantime, if anyone asks you what you want for Christmas....see below. IDM Album of 1994 ----------------- This is, I guess, the premier category. Remember everyone cast three votes so a fairly resonable number were cast. The Top Ten Albums: The No Risk Disks 1 Plastikman Musik 2= Orbital Snivilisation 2= Mu-Ziq Bluff Limbo 2= Aphex Twin Selected Ambient Works Volume 2 2= Global Communication 76:14 6= Future Sound Of London Lifeforms 6= Mu-Ziq Tango N' Vectif 8 Autechre Amber 9= Woob 1194 9= Beaumont Hannant Texturology So, Hawtin takes the spoils. Musik was a clear winner with about 25% of those voting placing it in their three. The chasing pack surprisingly saw Bluff Limbo polling very well despite the limited availability. I suppose given a wider distribution it would have topped the list. Thanks to the CD reissue of Tango N' Vectif, Mu-Ziq are the only act to feature twice in the top ten. The next few: 11= Banco De Gaia Maya 11= Sabres Of Paradise Haunted Dancehall 11= Ken Ishii Inner Elements 11= Pentatonik Anthology IDM Single/EP of 1994 --------------------- This where we could have done with a bigger response because well over half the votes were cast for things which no one else voted for (there were around 65 nominations in total). The Top Ten Singles/EPs: 1 Future Sound Of London Lifeforms (Paths 1-7) 2= Autechre Anti EP 2= Aphex Twin Analouge Bubblebath IV 4 Autechre Bass Cadet 5 Mu-Ziq Phi*1700 [U/V] 6= Aphex Twin On 6= Orbital Diversions 6= Auteurs v Mu-Ziq EP 6= Plastikman Plastique 6= Dust Brothers My Mercury Mouth Lifeforms was a clear winner here with again around 25% making it one of their three picks. Autechre, Aphex Twin and Mu-Ziq (again) polling well. IDM Track Of The Year --------------------- In retrospect probably not a great category and suffered from lots of tracks getting just one vote. I'll record these in the full results. Maybe someone can mix a tape with them all on it ! Once again though, Mu-Ziq scored particularly well with Roy Castle and Phi*1700 [U/V] tying for first place in this category. I suppose they would have done even better if the Bluff Limbo tracks had names ! IDM Compilation of 1994 ----------------------- We seem to have had a fair number of good compilations this year. The top scorers were as follows: 1 Artificial Intelligence II 2 Trance Europe Express 3 3 In Order To Dance 5 4 Headz (Mo' Wax) 5= FAX USA 5= Trance Europe Express 2 5= Agenda 22 (Eevolute) I don't suppose it was too much of a surprise, given the origin of the idm list, that AI2 polled almost twice the votes of any other compilation. IDM Chill Out Album of 1994 --------------------------- Not everyone voted in this category but a few albums were clear leaders: 1 Global Communication 76:14 2 Aphex Twin Selected Ambient Works Volume 2 3 Woob 1194 4 FFWD FFWD Global Communication just nicked it from RDJ. Personally, I was pleased to see Woob doing well as a quality newcomer this year. IDM Label Of 1994 ----------------- Voting here produced a 1-2-3 way ahead of any other nominations: 1 Warp 2 Rephlex 3 GPR Warp topped this by a fair margin. I will compile your live picks and tips for 1995 into a separate post. Please mail with any suggestions on how you might like to see any fuller results presented. Hopefully I've done my sums right in compiling these results. To me, it looks like Mu-Ziq should take the MVP award for good polling across the board. jbuzza@cix.compulink.co.uk (Jon Burrell)
