this is perhaps the >worst< mix cd available right now. the mixing is dreadful, consisting of mere spin backs and slapping the next tune on. it's certainly not 'thislisty' but i'm not telling you to take it elsewhere. if you want THE real deal, you must purchase this: various - 'renegade selector series 2.2' crammed/selector sel 2 i got my copy at tower. it consists of a megamix by dj randall (a real junglist dj, not like dj db) and the mixing is so unbelievably flawless...i almost lost track of where tracks began and ended... the material is (yes! believe it or not!) very 'thislisty'! if i have to use the word intelligent then i will! nice dreamy tunes with deep bass lines and great drums. a few vocal samples ehere and there. one the megamix is over you get 4 full length bonus tracks, including origin unknown's remix of 'dread bass' which is incredible. if you want to listen to what 'intelligent jungle' or 'deep jungle' (as i prefer to call it now, i think) then this is the compilation to buy. it's only $15.99 for an import! -- . _/,_ . /o...\__// \_'__/``\` \`

Hmm... glad I didn't buy it. I was hunting for it for a while because I read reviews in 2 different music mags that claimed it was "essential". I bought Moonshine's Law of The Jungle instead.

I'm glad I stirred up controversy -- it is apparent that there are other jungle/breaks comps out there that might be better. To define HOOWP1, I would say that it was a misnomer to call it a 'mix' record, since it really is a string of tracks more or less beatmatched without silence between the cuts. Many of the cuts on the disk are quite strong, however. They're all very, very short, which makes me wonder if they're edits. I can't imagine doing vinyl DJ'ing where you drop a new tune every 2 1/2 minutes. One interesting thing about listening to jungle is the extent to which it informs the work of more 'mainstream' IDM types like Muziq. -- Kent Williams kent@cadsi.com "Swirling a sound [in Quadrophonic Space] at an audio rate produces interesting spatial and modulative effects" -- Serge Modular Product Spec Sheet.
