I still think my favorite IDM record of all time is "Sweetnighter" by
Weather Report, which came out in 1974. Real drums & a hairy South
American percussionist playing all those funny things they make out of
gourds and leaf springs down there ... most of the keyboards are Fender Rhodes
played through a wah-wah pedal!
The best part of what passes for IDM is the synthesis it implies: music made
at the crossroads of tribalism and technology, gay and straight, black & white,
etc. Hell, there are some Public Enemy tracks that you could drop in the
mix with Jungle & deep Detroit without missing a beat!
Maybe it's ridiculous to preach this on a mailing list dedicated to a "genre"
but it's always important to keep your ears open.
My next mix will also feature Jim Nabors singing "Windmills of your Mind"
with a new spindle hole drilled off center ...
