In the sense that IDM was used to describe music which was "breaking free from the restrictive rules of existing genres", the term is "dead"/inappropriate. But "IDM" as a genre label is appropriate. I consider "IDM" has both a genre and umbrella genre label, just like "rock". Despite how inappropriate and despised the term "IDM" itself may be, people are more likely to know what I'm talking about if I say "IDM". If Aphex Twin isn't "IDM", what is it? I've only just recently joined the IDM mailing list, but I've seen the "IDM is dead" topic come up a number of times. Is it really such a big deal that "IDM" music is no longer breaking new ground? I assume all genres of music go though phases of innovation and stagnation/consolidation. People still create music which can be called "IDM". People still listen to music which can be called "IDM". All IMO of course! ;) >-- -- >Is IDM dead? > >Read full feature :: >http://igloomag.com/doc.php?task=view&id=1638&category=features > >Adam Winfield examines the IDM genre-tag and asks some key players >(Thaddeus Hermann of City Centre Offices and Mike Paradinas of >Planet-Mu) about their opinion on the issue of intelligent dance >music. >-- -- --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
