Either this is very funny or it's very sad. Context is different for different people. For example:
quoted 7 lines its got everything to do with it...doesnt> its got everything to do with it...doesnt > originality and newness count > for anything? if you had been listening to the > beatles and the rolling > stones for 6 years prior, ud realize that NEU! > (among others) was a > breath of fresh air...
...if someone hadn't been listening to The Beatles or the Rolling Stones 6 years prior, but in fact had been paying attention to different musical trends (sorry I'm not as much of a scholar to mention anything specific, but certainly Beatles & Rolling Stones weren't the only two options back then), Neu! (or anything else) would be perceived differently. Case in point: In the summer of 1997, my big loves were Tori Amos, They Might Be Giants, and Nine Inch Nails - the latter being the most "adventurous" stuff I listened to. On a whime I bought this CD by this guy called "Aphex Twin." He blew my mind. It was unlike anything I'd heard before and I knew I loved it. However, if I'd been paying attention to electronic music and "IDM" and all of this throughout the 90's, Aphex Twin would have been much less of a shock to my system. In the creator's context of his influences, contemporaries, label, etc. - Aphex's RDJ Album is good, but not really revolutionary. Especially considering the Hangable Auto Bulb releases two (or one?) years prior. So, yes, context is everything, but whose context? The artist's, the label's, an abstract historal context, or the listener's? In which case, which listener? You? Me? I hope I don't sound like I'm lecturing, but just saying "context is everything" and then lambasting someone else for not sharing your context and therefore your views is kind of short-sighted, IMHO.
