I happen to enjoy the poppy/r&b aspects of 2step
garage quite a bit. I enjoy the slick sexy production
and pitchwarped vocals from such big names as Sunship
(the Sweet Female Attitude and Victoria Beckham
remixes are a treat for open-minded IDMers!) and
Artful Dodger.
I think there is a lot of opportunity for 2step to
influence IDM, much like hip hop has. Back in 95, I'm
sure many of you (not all of you, so don't even
bother) would have frowned at the idea of hip hop
influenced IDM, save for what Autechre was doing...
the thought of a Prefuse73 is more what I'm thinking.
Now you have laptop geeks playing Cannibal Ox and
praising RZA for his production skills on the latest
Bobby Digital CD (hey, I'm guilty of the latter part,
even though I'm not a laptop geek...yet).
Is it the poppy element of 2step that people dislike
so? Then why do people go ga-ga for copyright
violators like V/VM and the Tigerbeat6 crew?
Many people on here would dis folk music (I was raised
on a steady diet of it), but Bogdan R. and Leafcutter
John have used it as an element in their music to
notable praise.
Hey... jungle! Drum N Bass? Where didja think drill
and bass came from? Influences from other styles is
what has made IDM last as long as it has... anything
from acid house to musique concrete so far. Just look
at what Squarepusher has done with just two songs: "My
Red Hot Car" (from Go Plastic) and "Untitled" (from
the recent 12")... he's created some classic material
by taking to 2step formula and tweaking it to his
specs.
But fine... my opinion is just one in the sea. But
don't be surprised when 2step is the electro of 2012,
and you're all sucking it off 'ardcore.
-djgyn, forever
P.S.- I still don't like electro, though admittedly, I
like Two Lone Swordsmen (and the Radioactive Man side
project, but I prefer the other Rotters Gold Club
singles to it).
P.P.S.- Rotters Gold Club rules!
