I recently obtained a How the Grinch Stole Christmas picture disk from a used bin, and it's great. I am thinking of making some samples of the silly Dr. Suess gibberish rhymes and putting them on the web. Would anyone be interested, and what file format/sampling rate is used for this sort of thing (if you were to use samples from the web, which format/sampling rate would be ideal)? thanks -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- anagram@cats.ucsc.edu http://home.cwnet.com/anagram/

Pretty much anything would work, since most of the sample heads have software that can go from any format to any other format. Probably given that it's spoken word, 22khz mono 16 bit would be plenty good enough, either WAV(PC Standard) or AIFF(Mac Standard). I would mention that if anyone was thinking of using Dr. Suess samples in a commercial track they should think twice. Dr. Suess' Estate guards his works very jealously -- I doubt you could obtain clearance for his words. You would also have to get clearance from both the company that owns the rights to the recording, and the person whose voice appears on the recording.

Yeah, try getting Boris Karlof's sig. =8) W.r.t. legal sampling, what are the ground rules here ? I guess what I'm curious about is what is the determining factor when copyright infringement occurs. I seem to remember when sampling technology started to come into play, there was some ruling (or hearsay) about anything longer than 3 seconds was infringement and less than 3 seconds was not.

The strict legal definition is that there is no legal sampling without clearance. Period. End of Story. The real world is different -- DJ Shadow and Luke Vibert and Amon Tobin all make tracks that are 100% uncleared samples.

Not sure if this has been replied to yet, if so, excuse it, but the law (in america) is no more than 4 measures of music. So if you have some extra fast techno, that could be less than 3 seconds, but more if it's slow like Suess. But, this is for music, so i'm not sure whut the case would be if you were sampling voices talking or something. Welp that was my 3 sentences or so of input, hope it helped. */*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/*/ */*/* *Spawn O'Hell * *Email: Spawn@mad.scientist.com * *ICQ #: 1356842 * *Find me on iRC(EFNet) in #Trax * * * * "Evil will always triumph, because Good is dumb." - Spaceballs * * * * "(A)bort, (R)etry, (G)et out the .45?" * * * * "He tells me the username.
