:::Mike Dred : Macrocosm EP (R&S 94039)
The title track, Macrocosm, is a pretty slow acid track by todays standards
clocking in at around 121bpm. Nothing too innovative but still a nice
piece. The second track, Oxycute, is where Mike Dredd shows some
individuality in a very comical sounding acid track this time clocking in
at around 139bpm. I think a previous review described this as "giddy"
which is just about as good a word as I can come up with. One of the
stranger acid tracks you'll hear i'd imagine.
:::Mike Dred : Fu-Chin-Ra (Machine Codes )
Track one (text/outer) is a nice acid track with multiple layers and a
smooth beat at 132bpm. Its followed by a slower (125bpm) and much simpler
acid track backed by some airy synths. This side ends with a very short
track which sounds like a cassette being loaded into a VCR or something
similar before catching the lock groove. The flip sides opens with some
piercing electronic screeching before beginning a fierce 166 bpm acid
attack. Absolute mayhem. The final track is almost equally as fast at
around 160bpm but is less of a audio attack than its predecessor. Its
builds well with a nice bassline but it doesn't stray much from its
initial path.
:::Space Time Continuum : Pressure (Astralwerks 6128)
A nice three-tracker from Spacetime aka Jonah Sharp. Contains two of
his own remixes and the original version of "Pressure" from his
impressive full length titled "Sea Biscuits." Of the three, I prefer the
beatless Horizontal mix myself.
:::Drexciya : Deep Sea Dweller (Shockwave 1007)
More twisted electro sounds from Drexciya. Plenty of dissonance, sliding
electro tones, and harsh sounds. It was the B-Side of this record that
initially drove me to buy it - some nice funky idm. A smooth bassline
drives the outer track on this side, topped by some fluid sounding
electron chatter. The inner track is equally as smooth and has some nice
transforming effects in it. The only thing I dont like about this B-Side
is that it plays inside out and I always forget.
