I was just wondering - i'm swapping Vox's for Sonic Bubblegum, and a friend has just begged me to ask if any of you wonderful guys'n'gals out there could get hold of a copy of Axis Base (sp?) by Jeff Mills (perhaps using a pseudonym.) When I was in SF last weekend, I bought "X-MIX-2: The Tracks", which is a 3x12" containing all the source material for X-MIX-2. 13 delicious singles for $20. None of the tracks are brand spanking new, but it's great stuff nonetheless. I'm not sure if it's available on CD. Call your favorite record store.

You may also want to look into getting a UR compilation CD. 'Escape Into The Void' is quite good. It's a compilation of stuff from Submerge with tracks from The Martian, Mad Mike, Drexciya, The Suburban Knight and more. Just a bit older but possibly even better is 'Depth Charge 1'. This also features 'Final Frontier'! Tracks on this compilation are by Mad Mike, The Martian and Ghetto Tech. Both these compilations came out before Galaxy 2 Galaxy. A few moments ago i was listening to 'Final Frontier Part 2', which is on the double 12" 'Acid Rain III-Meteor Shower'. Yes, I'll second that. I've actually managed to get my hands on almost all the UR stuff that's available on CD. Unfortunately, I've never been able to track down Depth Charge 1. Perhaps I should try Record Time again... Question for all the really dedicated UR collectors... A friend of mine let me listen to a CD by The Final Cut. He claimed that Jeff Mills (or some portion of UR) was a member of the group. The band broke up and Jeff Mills left, although what was left of the group recorded an industrial-ish CD for Nettwerk (again under the name The Final Cut) that was stylistically quite different. I listened to the first CD, and I could swear that I heard that distinctive UR style on a number of the tracks. There was no track listing, liner notes, or any other helpful information included. So ... was this for real -- was Jeff Mills once a member of the group the Final Cut? Rob

Yes, this is true. Jeff helped with a record called 'The Bass Has landed' and the LP 'Deep Into The Cut'. After the album Jeff quit Final Cut. I haven't heard any of this, so i have no idea if it's any good. From what I've heard of Jeff Mills ("Changes of Life" off Tresor II comp), it's a joke. But then some may like the hard but minimal stuff. But this song just sounded like a kid and his toys... -djkc
