You all know the kick-ass beat from Meat Beat Manifesto's "Helter Skelter". What I want to know is, is it their original beat? Also, the last thing I got was Satyricon. What have I missed besides the Peel Sessions? Anyone have a discography? I believe so - there was an interview in Creem (ugh) a while back that certainly implied it (the author had nothing nice to say about the Prodigy's "Charly" in that vein, although if I recall right Jack didn't really care).

Thankfully, I didn't miss Mindstream remixes...I played the fuck out of the Orbital mix...! So Circles and Peel Sessions.....ok...thanks! Tamara

On a related note, I was listening to Eric B. and Rakim's _Follow the Leader_ the other day (great record, and only 29 cents at Best Buy!) and I instantly recognized a beat sample MBM uses on one of the tracks from _Armed Audio Warfare_. I'll listen to it again, and try to pin it down. Now, the real question: Could Meat Beat Manifesto be the spiritual heir of Eric B. and Rakim? Nah. I mean, look at "Hello Teenage America": - The rhythm track comes from Joy Division's "Incubation" flexi-disc - The rolicking piano bit comes from Really Bland's (oops, sorry, "Steely Dan") "Rikki Don't Lose That Number" Does this mean that Jack Dangers is the bastard offspring of Ian Curtis and Donald Fagen? I don't think so ... :-) Jack is an inspired sample-meister, that's for sure. And he can also smoke me under the table (not that that's hard, but it still impressed me (-: ) ... I have this sorta vague hazy memory of a San Diego Meat Beat show I saw once ... - Greg

I'm sure Jon will kick in too, but I own the these albums plus a few of their singles (helter skelter dogstar man radio babylon, etc) Armed Audio Warfare Storm The Studio [fairly similar, one was made from material from the other after a studio fire] Satyricon 991/2 Personally I love the first two. the beat i have no idea exactly wher it was sampled from... or maybe im confusing it with the Radio Babylon samplee example, which was the 1-2 of the 1-2-3-4 repeated twice from the "Fool's Gold" (Staun Rausez) boit incidentally, regarding the prior post about the sample from Eric B. and Rakim (a satin) i recognize the beat from You Got the Fear sampled from a T LA ROCK song from 1985... personally, i believe pre-99% MBM deserves the apellation ACID HIP-HOP. anyone agree? i think this describes his loopy hard noisy hip-hop much too accurately. i find it sad he was ever called industrial. peace, DE ARTICLE POSEUR TRY... yeah... what i think is so swell about it is the fact that it is so chaotic... it seems like the song titles are almost random... like someone put a bunch of pieces of songs in a box, shook it up and randomly pasted them back together again and then repeated this process many times, but still wound up with something totally perfect and beautiful... i dunno... i just like that album a whole lot... much more than i like armed audio warfare, which seems more "focused" in the traditional sense of the word... it's the only meat beat record that i haven't at any point been bored by [although i like their other stuff a whole lot too, generally..]

Storm the Studio WAS the album made after the masters for the ORIGINAL Armed Audio Warfare became charcoal briquettes. And yes, i have heard Kneel and Buzz and Kick that Man, and love them. I guess my problem is not with their being called industrial per se, but because industrial degenerated into such an angry man rahrrahr movement, which meant at the MBM/Orbital/ Ultramarinr concert(s) in New York, you saw that at the November show where MBM was missing, the crowd was an alternative/raver mix... and then at the December show, when MBM had healed their visa problems, the crows was suddenly dominated by black-leather-jacketed long haired NINnies who proceeded to mosh once "Helter Skelter" started playing. ugggh... point being, because thes Young Angry Men had heard MBM was industrial, they were ready to react to them just like Reznor's sub-metal slag. any flames, et al. direct to me not the list please... Well, since "right" is subjective I won't press the issue, but ... I think you missed my point. The point was if someone says that a Meat Beat album is "unfocused" and refers to "Hey, the masters are all burnt!", then it would make more sense if they meant "Armed Audio Warfare", since that album is by definition a more patchwork affair given that the original masters were toast and it had to be put together in bits and pieces and with replacement bits, etc. On the other hand, "Storm The Studio" has only what, 4 "tracks" total (in essence)? I found that it flowed *incredibly* well, and "unfocused" is about the last thing I would ever think of when describing that album ...

Ah, so when you said "I find it sad he was ever called Industrial" in reality you weren't really referring to them (let's remember, Meat Beat is a "them"), but to their audience. Subtle difference. These things don't bother me as much because in the end, "Words is words, music is music" ((tm) D. R. Goettel 1993).
