None This whole "guitar" debate is just getting ridiculous. IDM is not some sacred formula like Christianity. Guitars are not heretical. If you doubt, trip back in time to 1972 (or thereabouts... uncle jonnie's brain isn't what it once was) and slap on Fripp & Eno's "No Pussyfooting." More experimental, intelligent and out there than a truckful of Aphex Twerps. And guess what... most of it was done with guitars. To answer another's posting, yes, Underworld use guitars. And good for them; I love it! Listen to the Underworld remix of "Lush" by Orbital. GUITARS! Shock! Horror! Best thing on the "Diversions" CD if you ask me. Somebody switched the de-caf out of the OpCode coffee pot, I see :-) Erm, "No Pussyfooting" ... 1973, mostly done on Revox A77 reel-to-reels. Experimental? Intelligent? Out there? Hell yes. More so than Aphex? Uh ... I don't think so. But comparing musics 20 years apart is hardly worth the bother. The contexts are too different. I like 'em both :-) As for guitars & Ambient, I could drop a mention of Justin Broadrick's (he of that Godflesh thingy) solo project Final; the album is called "One". Lots of guitars making strange mostly-ambient sounding thingies that don't sound anything like guitars. Then again, we're at the edge of the Universe here; one step further and we're into "Ambient Industrial" and that's best left for another place/list/newsgroup/whatever. Maybe not. For pure ambience/terror, "Pure II" from Godflesh's _Pure_ album is in the same vein as the final track on Skinny Puppy's _Last Rights_, the name of which escapes me. Maybe they're not danceable, but they're both approaching "ambientness", albeit from a different angle. BTW, just how many irons in the pot does Broadrick have? Painkiller, Ice, and one other one that's slipped my mind. Busy guy -- he does remixes too. I really like music today. If you want to talk about guitars and ambience, you must mention Labradford. I posted a review not long ago. One guy plays guitar, another a motley assortment of moogs. Most of their recording is done in a big echoey hallway in the basement of a university building, so they echo is natural rather than digital. They have some songs with words, and no beats, so it's not exactly IDM, but it is pretty ambient stuff.

Jon, I haven't seen anyone arguing that guitars are "heretical" -- rather I've seen quite a few posters wishlisting/speculating about what their "ideal" guitar/electronic fusion would sound like. i hate to be a complete idiot (though i might already be famous for it) but where is the guitar on mountain goat? if it is the lead melodic sound that i am thinking of... i can't be so sure it is a guitar... in fact i think it is a synth version of a guitar (i have heard some korgs that have sounds extremely similar to that). manish

Nope, it is a guitar (with delay). Future Music have an interview with FSOL this month and Brian Douggans (sp?) states this in the FSOL equipment list. Well then, if its a synth I guess its OK. I was a bit worried I'd have to use the disc for a coaster from now on. Speaking of guitars, I heard a cool track on the community radio station last night. It was by a group in Barcelona called Barcelona-Tribe or B-Tribe for short. Lots of flamenco guitar, over ambient Italo house. What sounded like Nusrat Ali Fetah was mixed in as well. In short fairly nice. It was on a salsa show and the host didn't know what to make of it. She said, "Well this sort of sounds new age, but not quite, I really don't know what to call it, and I've never heard anything like it." I called in and helped her out. :-)

The 'real' underground? Yes. The real underground will not fear it it will embrace it. Ten years from now the things that are now 'alternative' will be old news, having already passed 'trendy'... If this 'real underground' is accepted as a continually changing thing, then maybe this is an accurate statement. If 'underground' is taken as a concept rather than a group of people. House music used to be underground. The rave culture used to be underground. Now its in every 'hip' rag from here to calamazoo. Everything will begin on the edge and be considered 'cool' and then it will be picked up by shrewd marketeers and sold until its old hat. It is the method of the beast. the corporate beast. enjoy the underground while its underground. but dont attach to it high ideals. there are those in every group who will sell the souls of the rest regardless of what some in the same group want. its a nasty law of nature...i have to deal with it in art...the fads, etc...i just have to try to keep growing and hope im never considered 'trendy' whoa what a tangent. but at least its not a religious argument later, jasonosaj

My regards exactly but my point was in sort of taking it a step further and stating that when all the commercialism flourishes then those dedicated to "experimental" (i.e. underground) will push even deeper. This all in turn brings a wilder, weirder, underground while the "above" ground aspects that are being commercialized sort of help feed the growth of the more experimental by bringing money into the scene. We're kinda' going deep into it while my comment was aimed at a reference to an annoying strain on the list that I was not familiar with. Being new and all I apologize for the misunderstanding. I guess it's a pet peeve of mine when people criticize promotion of the scene. I realize that people can get pretty sleazy at times and there is no excuse for sleaziness. My misunderstanding. -robert
