Hiya. I just got a promo copy of a compilation for review in the campus paper, "Speed Limit 140 BPM Plus Four", on Moonshine Records in the US. Here's the track listing: Top Buzz--"Living in Darkness" Bay B Kane--"Wake Up" The Four Horsemen of the Apocalpyse--"Drowning in Her" Origin Unknown--"31 Seconds" Omni Trio--"Renegade Snares [Foul Play Remix]" DJ Crystl--"Crystlize" New Romancer--"Pennywise" SLM--"Die Hard" Bonny & Highlander--"Summer Breeze" Cloud 9--"Mr. Logic" Tayla & LTJ Bukem--"Bang the Drum" Metalheads--"Saint Angel" I've already got some opinions on this sucker from fellow Irvine and IDMers Joachim and Dana, and would like to hear some more. I'm very interested also in knowing how old the songs on here are, and if there's anybody who I should keep an ear out for in particular (and what else they might have available). Wow what a pukka compilation - DJ Tayla is a mate from my neck of the woods, Sittingbourne, Kent. LTJ Bukem is a very good established EastEnd Hardcore DJ - ( Plumstead way, I think ). I'm glad to see they are getting over there now. Top Buzz is also from the EastEnd I met him last year in Milton Keynes - his track was firat released at the end of 92 then rereleased last year, but it is still a classic!! Bay B Kane is a rather samey hardcore ( darkcore ) track, breakbeats a bit too chopped up, this track appears on Hard Leaders 3 ( Buy it for Windows in the sky - Acen, anybody know what happened to Acen? ) The Four horsemen of the apocalypse track I can remember hearing it being highly rated, but can't remember how it goes. Origins Unknown - Wow , easily one of my fave tracks last year, check out that infectious breakbeat + Bass to kill and dead tuneful too...This is worth getting on 12" since the B-side is just as kickin' ( Ram records, somewhere in Essex ). Omni Trio and Foul Play are both good established Hardcore releasers - Check out the Foul Play E.Ps ( up to vol 4 ) each with a remix 10". Metal heads have several other releases out, but they aren't so hot... Cloud 9 is an alright track. If you like this style of music I would recommend 4 Hero - Students of the future (Reinforced) Nookie - Nookies revenge (Reinforced) EQ Tips E.P. ( Sappho) The International Rude Boys ( White Label ) LTJ Bukem (pronounced L T J Book-em BTW) - Happy Vibes S and A vol 1 (Homegrown) Check out also the SubPlate vol's (1,2,3) and anything on Reinforced and Suburban Base and Kickin' and DeeJay Records (from that record shop down Kings Road, wotsitcalled?) . You will find withthis style of music the whole scene in UK is a very tight knit community since it originated from East London, Kent and Essex (check SUAD, XL in '89) and all the DJs, Promoters, Labels know each other. Most 12" are written by established acts or established DJs. Look out for DJ releases from Swan-E, DJ Pooch (another mate), Ellis Dee (realname:Darren Ellis - Geddit) Looking from a DJ point ofview it is best to scratch mix the tunes together the BPM is usually about 160BPM at the parties and 200BPM on the pirate Radio. Everyone thinks hardcore is dead but it has remained in the place of origin and is very muchlive and kickin' although it has virtually no media coverage and it is not at all trendy ( House music,Transvestites and overhyped dj s...puhlease,) I hope you check it all out, if want any info please emailme - I'm not sying I know it all but I have noticed that noone else on this list ever discusses this music and I have been into this music since I was 13 seeing it grow from Hip Hop (Check Overlord X) and I know the scene down south, unfortunately living in manchester it is very hard to get the sounds so I don't have a comprehensive view on what gets released. It isn't discussed on this list 'cos it's not considered to be I.D.M. Well that is a real shame - who decides wot is and wot isnt IDM, I think more thought goes into a Hardcore track than a load of shit the aphex twin releases. Besides which, most big IDM considered "artists" originate from the hardcore scene. I bought Digeridoo in early 92, the first release, because I heard it a loads of hardcore parties - it has a breakbeat, but it was totally different to most jungley tunes. I heard the best set ever last night on Frontline FM 104.6, GM area.. Hardcore is turning to ambient completely. There is a track out with an ORB sample, amazing breakbeat and real bass. I've also heard a very biosphere style track... The music is just getting better.... Check it J.D. .........................................................
