I've been listening to the Sven Vath album (Accident...) and I must confess it's not what I had hoped. I had only previously heard "...whales in the darkness". While "Caravan of Emotions" and the other track on disk 1 are both along this mellow vein, all the tracks have a higher (if I may use the words of another idm'er a few weeks back...) "corn factor" than I had counted on. In particular, it seems that in the mellower tracks there are some straight synth sounds that sound really typical new age in their execution. The faster tracks on disk two don't really appeal to me, either, and just seem like your standard post-techno dance tracks. :( wah. The day after I bought my expensive import double vinyl I heard that it was available US domestic on CD. I wish I had known that earlier! I can say I would still get the domestic CD, but I would have rather spent my vinyl money on something else. This all makes me so sad because I really liked his glittery butterfly face on a remix single I saw ;( -tt

Which single? Some of us are a bit more rabid about Sven than others. ObIDM: "Water From A Vine Leaf" (and most of Strange Cargo III) funginck rogs man!

I really like L'Esperanza the best out of all the stuff on his album. I think it's the most moving.. That soft, air-xylophone lead is really nice.. There's another track I really like too, but the name escapes me at the moment. 'Ritual of Life' is cool, but the entire time I'm listening to it, I want the drums to just stop fucking around and come out and punish.. Texturally, it's cool though.. Oh - I'm talking about that 'Tribal Acid Mix' of Ritual of Life, BTW. I forgot what the album version sounds like.. (what does it sound like, anyway?) Darshan

A well thought-out opinion which ought to be shared by everyone. ;-) Roy Badami writes:

Don't take it too seriously, it's just for fun. The list is here for us to discuss the music. A bit of yes!no!yes!no! argumentation has never hurt anyone. (hi Jon!) :-) - chris@minsk.docs.uu.se

Oh come on. One of the WORST pieces of crap? How long have you been buying music?? ;) There's a difference between something that's merely disappointing and something that's truly rotten...why is it that you think it's so bad? Not dancey enough? Not chill enough? Elaborate, folks! I think the SV thing is outstanding. If we're gonna have this sucks/that's great, lets describe why we feel that way. It always helps me to hear why somebody likes or doesn't like a release. (I like the SV because it sets out to create a trip, and I think it does so. Not necessarily a dance CD, but certainly one with wonderful melodies and soothing sonic textures. Puts the lie, once again, to the theory that modern 'dance' music and synth music has no sense of permanence. or something.) best, stu 8)

*grin* at least i got some action going here. Seriously though, i guess i got the idm and the uk-dance lists mixed up. . . i *have* posted more elaborate stuff about why i don't like SV, but not to this list. My mistake, sorry. As for how long i've been buying music. . . well, at least long enough to realize that the only good parts of SV's album are total rip offs from Tangerine Dream (Compare "Atem" to "Drifting Like Wales"), except that SV adds some annoying strings.

This is exactly what i think is lacking in SV's music. The record isn't a trip, just like most New Age music isn't. "Caravan of Emotions" for example, is, in my opinion, anything but a caravan of emotions.

What sounds like "wonderful melodies" to you sounds like Roland D series synths to me. ;) When i played SV's album in my apartment, i had to turn it off, not because my neighbours complained, but because my elevator refused to work due to envy. This music simply has has *no* content! How's that for elaboration? ;) -- Petter Karlstrom cl2pkarl@cling.gu.se . . .Know Your Self. . .

Well, we certainly don't agree, but I'd rather hear why someone doesn't like something or why they do than just "Sven Vath sucks" or "Aphex Twin is God" or that stuff. Thanks! stu 8)
