well i guess in the UK you don't have idiot sound system people who run the highs too high and don't bother checking the room for proper EQ prior to starting the party. here in the US that sort of stupidity is common. fortunately, at least locally, people are beginning to get clued in to the possibility of hearing damage and more sound people are actually checking the rooms with noise generators and spectrum analyzers in order to set up proper EQing. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Jon has a good point here. My friend Jack is an audio engineer, and he can make a sound system crank so loudly that the bass will almost lift you off the floor, but he knows that certain frequencies damage hearing more than others, so he lowers the levels of those frequencies. If the sound is done right, it can be very loud without hurting your ears at all. This also doesn't mean that you have to cut out the high end or make the high noises sound bad. You can still get great sound reproduction across the full spectrum without blasting people's brains out through their eardrums (this is the way I've felt at a couple high wattage/poor tuning events).
