my view on this is that such a poll wouldn't suffer from waiting a bit. like two years or so. in two years a certain amount of perspective will exist - all those 1999 records that now, five days after the end of 1999, will have paled a bit: just like those released in 1997 may not seem as interesting now as they did in january 1998... what i'm saying is, if you do a "best of the decade" poll now, it will probably be quite a bit slanted towards the end of the decade. on the other hand, nobody's going to have the patience to wait two or more years (to really get some perspective i wonder if you wouldn't have to wait, like, ten years...). so why not, let's do a poll now - we can always do another later... hs __________________________________________________________ 1999: cabbage boy, scanner, breakbeat era, terranova, we, jochem paap, tobin, snd, gus gus, boom boom satellites, capitol k, freq.nasty, stigh strand vs rutherford, i s a n --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

I did a reply post last week - suggesting that we do do this 'best of decade' poll after the '99 poll. I think this is the best way to do so. And then we can compare the 'best of 99' with the 'best of the decade'. Thanks to all who have sent in their lists. Keep them coming... A_Zed >> Just a suggestion for contributors/compiler: "Best of the decade" is very broad. It's probably a good idea to separate them into three catergories based on the three "intelligent" lists of the Hyperreal scale (ambient, IDM, 313). Then people could contribute three, two, or one, but the data would be a little more consistent. After all, it's weird to compare From Within with Plastikman, or Speedy J with Jochem Paap's FAX output, or whatever. Also what about singles/compilations of work? Should these be eligible - especially if they contain pre-1990 work (ala Kevin Saunderson, Juan Atkins, Derrick May CD's, etc.)? So many questions. Could sombody PLEASE explain what "313" stands for? If it's Detroit, then what relevance does the number have? Thank you most kindly and then, let's begin listing our lists (I have a group of friends who are making their Top 100 Of All Time lists, *in order* of 1-100... I was invited, but declined, since it's all arbitrary and changes from day to day with me. And in the end, does it actually _really_ matter?) That said, I do enjoy voyeuristically reading other people's lists. 313 is the telephone area code for Detroit. Upon surveying the available evidence for this concept, there are countless problems that might arise as a result of attempting to compile the best of the decade. The main difficulty would be the extremely broad range of classic music from the decade. For those of you in the know, it would be of no introduction how many classic releases are on the output each year. To put into perspective, if we estimate (hypothetically) 100 classic releases each year, then we have 1000 releases to chose from! To compile such high numbers are logistically very dificult, this is after breaking it down into several sub-categories. Its difficult enough counting for this '99 poll with the diverse range of favourites. However, because of the defined boundaries of '99 releases, we can at least have an estimate of the best releases, as there are obvious communalities and agreements on certain releases. Unless someone can come up with more fullproof methods of conducting a best of decade poll, then the best of decade should be just left to personal selections. The only method I can think of right now would be to put up a pre-list of classic candidates of 90-99 (w/ sub categories) and then people can select their favourites from this. This would at least set some boundaries - however, it wouldn't be completely comprehensive.
