If you like the Desir mix, you'll probably really enjoy their second release (entitled 777, the one with the green cover and the "watery" name, not the one with the shell). It's basically more of the same -- 7:7 Expansion is great, On the Seventh Night is drving, wonderful, thick and goes great with Acid Warp, and the album shows a general thick production value that I don't find often from dance music artists...rich, pounding, and I really, really like it. The first release (entitled System 7 in the UK, with a diamond on the cover and 777 in the US with a shell on the cover) is signifigantly more hit-or-miss. A lot of the tracks are seem homogenized and unexciting (Habibi, Starnge Quotations, Freedom Fighters) with some pretty bad vocal tracks -- but Sunburst is beautiful with its crisp multi-layered beat and melodic guitar line, and the Miracle on the UK version is driving. But, unless you really, really love Sunburst, it's prolly not a good choice. Just my $.02, 'course. David S. first album: UK release, jewel cover, "System 7" by System 7 somewhat trancey, but mostly melodic & poppy and/or vocal oriented. there are some nice cuts but some real stinkers, too. hillage's unique guitar whiney drone in every track. US release, shell cover, "777" by 777 mostly same tracks as UK first album, but a couple are remixes. second album: UK release, green cover, "777" by System 7 mostly trance, no vocals, much along lines of the track on TEEX, 'Desir (Ghost mix)'. less guitar, less pop, quite listenable. has kind of a round, fluid sound, not like other trance records. now out of print. [no US release]

i think in Volume 8 it says he (Thomas Fehlmann) is putting out a new album soon under the name Ready Made. i'm working on a Fehlmann discography which will include his productions (Sun Electric, etc). he's put out a Ready Made album on Rhythm King back in '86, believe it or not. someone might want to correct me on the volume 8 reference.. Anyone have any opinions on System 7's full length CD releases ? I like the tracks on TEEX, but haven't heard any others. Ditto for ReadyMade - any tips on their discs ? I recently picked up an older compilation called "Secret Life of Trance" (I grabbed it for a copy of Black Dogs "Flux D" mix - which is one of my fave tracks from a while back) - its a nice disc overall. If you can get it for a few $$'s, grab it. Greetings of the season to all idm'ers... Mark

Hey peoples, Just got my claws on the new System 7 single "Limited Addiction". Its very nice! Anyway, the reason I'm wasting bandwidth is to shed a little light on the question of new releases for those of you who don't know... Inside the single it is stated that the release date is October 1994 on Butterfly/Big Life. Two cd's will be released one called "Fire" with beats, the other called "Water" with the same tunes but *nearly* beatless. If this helps anyone...well here it is. If not...sorry. BTW, the single has remixes by Marshall Jefferson, Chris Andrews and Youth (plus a bunch of differently *mixed* edits). This little disc is absolutely wonderful. The Juno Reactor mix kicks booty. I can't wait until the fire album comes out. I really don't like the cheesy cardboard box though. For the money, you'd think they'd give you a plastic jewel box. Who wants a limited addition box anyway? Not me. No sirree.

Ok, picked up the new Portishead (guess it was released domestically yesterday) and I *LOVE* this! Flipping through a zine I saw a review of the "Sourtimes" single & it mentioned a "Bristol" sound... is there some kinda scene that's supporting this type of music.. & if so, who's making/releasing work like this... I want MORE :) -- _Dan

Hi, Well I've got the fire edition. IMHO a splendid rhythmic danceable stuff. With contributions of Laurent Garnier (I am great fan of FNAC/F Communications material), Derek May (Hopefully will bring some records of his own). Actually the guitar parts sound very nice, sprinkling echoing. Only last track ain't that good. It has a real solo in it :-). Maybe I'll do a review. Just check out this cd/record. :-) De mazzel, vriendelijk groeten (=good luck and greetings) Pieter Lub Enkhuizen/Amsterdam University of Amsterdam E-mail: lub@uba.uva.nl Interlibrary Loan Department drom@xs4all.nl Phone : + 31 (0)20 525 2322 Fax : + 31 (0)20 623 6070 To search in the Online Catalog (OPC) : telnet ts1.sara.nl type UBA (after DESTINATION?)+ ENTER Catalog in English? Derrick May just about always breaks out unreleased test pressings of his own stuff when he spins out live. Why he never releases anything is beyond me. :( [...one of this town's great mysteries...] On Now: Labradford - "Experience The Gated Oscillator" ----------------------------------------------------------------- dave walker, detroit art services _ marmoset@msen.com absolutely sweat, marie Dave Walker
