Alright I know that most of you have posted your best releases of 1999. I haven't yet because there has been so many excellent releases that have been very dificult to separate with number placings, so I will provide ten of what I consider to be seminal releases of '99. In addition, I think it will be a good idea to conduct some sort of a poll (from your top 10) to see the communalities of best releases. I have noticed that certain releases have featured strongly ie Lexaunculpt, Monolake's Gobi Desert, Dettinger's Intershop etc etc i.e Lance's post is quite a comprehensive top10 list. So I am suggesting a subscriber's poll and I'll count up tally's for the best 10 releases of the year (from numbers) and try to post the final verdict when all the results are in (sound like the scientific researcher I am??? - or am I just a data-analysis-results-discussion junkie). The final results will be collated from the most number of posts for a particular release, not what position it occupied on a particular person's list. If everyone is collectively interested in doing this, then I invite private emails of your top 10s for 99 - so as not to flood this list with repeats. This can include any format of *official* release ie LP, CD, 12", 10" minidisc...but no CDRs thanks. Let the polling begin... N.B - It must be a 1999 release. Please check dates on releases thanks. Polling closes on the 31st January 2000, so get those lists in quick. Meanwhile these are my 10 favourite releases for 99 - in no particular order. Arovane - Amx, No.8 (DIN) Lexencaulpt - Oh here some noise (Isophlux) V/A - Ischemic Folks (Schematic) Monolake - Gobi Desert (m/i Imbalance) Aril Brikha - Deeparture in Time (Transmat) Kit Clayton - Nek Salanet (~Scape) Rapaciolli - EP 1 (Vertical Forms) Jochem Paap - Vrs-mbnt II (Fax) V/A - Deeper Side of the Internet (Deep4Life) Jeff Mills - From the 21st (Axis/Sony Japan) Best regards, A_Zed ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Program Co-ordinator, Ambient Zone RTRFM 92.1 [http://rtrfm.ii.net] Sunday Electronic Listening ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Perth, W.Australia (WST) 11.00-01.00 Chicago (CST) 09.00-11.00 London (GMT) 15.00-17.00 Detroit/ Windsor (EST) 10.00-12.00 Frankfurt (CET) 16.00-18.00 --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

But without CDRs, how will the battling giants of IDM trainspotting assert their dominance in the field of micro-batch releases? Picture, if you will, the IDM Trainspotting Triathalon: 1. Older collectible releases (Ae "Cavity Job," Plaid "Mbuki Mvuki," Lego Feet, _Blech_ etc, measured in the maximum price each has fetched on E-bay) 2. Owning releases that may not exist (AFX sandpaper giveaway, 1/Tau rarities- score determined by a constant times the inverse of number of degrees of separation from artist that the release's existence is no longer verified by direct contact) 3. Micro-press IDM CD-R gathering (expressed as a sum of percentage of print run embodied by a single copy, divided by the number of qualifying CD-Rs owned by the competitor) A suitable prize shall be awarded to the victor (Christina Ricci's agent is not returning our phone calls). -rob --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

i dont understand the omission of cdrs- whats that all about?! lots of really good (and thus 'legitimate' whatever that means) music on cdr out there in 99, both released "comercially" as well as "privately". my 2 cents... thusly- my somewhat random10 "idm" picks of 1999 in no particular order: Curd Duca: Elevator 2 (on Mille Plateau) Neina: Formed Verse (on Mille Plateau) Atom Heart: Naturalist (on Rather Interesting) Hrvatski: Oiseaux 96-98 (on "Im Not Spelling The Damn Label!" :) Bogdan Raczynski: Samurai Math Beats (on Rephlex) Colongib: Mapping Music (on Kracfive) Thomas Brinkmann: Soul Center (on W.V.B) V/A: Emanated (on Emanate Records) V/A: Modulations and Transformations Vol. 4 (on Mille Plateau) V/A: Ischemic Folks (on Schematic) -Thad --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

The reason of the no CDR policy is not to undermine any good works that may have been on the format, rather to denote a more representative sample for the poll - which is all about *official* releases and not the *exclusivity* of music distribution or ownership. However, I do appreciate your unique method of lexical abstraction. Cheers all and keep those lists coming, its shaping up to be a good one, ;~) A_Zed --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

for the record: if your intent was to count only 'official' releases, then you should have said so. certain cdr releases were official releases offered for sale to the general public & not just promo copies. by putting cdrs out of the loop altogether, you're only contributing to the old idea that 'it's not real until a label's put its pawn on it' which is absolutely false. releases from phthalo, saundart, pitchcadet, monotonik, tomas jirku, lexaunculpt, etc. have been available _this year_ on cdr format for the general public to purchase: they are indeed _official_ & they deserve some fucking credit. & i'm not even going to get started on mp3. ~ david --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

1. Okay, flameboys, calm down. 2. How about a CDR of a forthcoming proper release? I received something as a promo just before the end of the year and want to flaunt it by including it on my own list. 3. What is real, anyway? If a CDR plays in the woods, did the original artist make the sounds the trees hear? Where are the damned philosophers and lawyers when you need them? The list manager should staff them 24-7, IMNSHO. OK, I have had no problems with prominent listmembers posting up their Top 10s thus far (without any negative reference to cdr-s). If you want to send in your tops with cd-rs and they are *official* by the artist and made available to sale for the public, then by all means do so. I'm not interested in wasting my time arguing about the logistics about what is real music or not. I just want a representative compilation of some of the best *official* releases of '99. Most of you have already posted your Tops in, and there have been very few Cd-r releases in these. Enough said. best release I got in '99 was a 70 minute recording of me banging on the grill of my bass speaker cabinet with a fork and my hand with a dirty sock pulled over it that I burned to a CD-R. I call it "Cryptopornographic Futurism for People with Acid Reflux". It's great, and extremely rare, but I certainly recommend it if you can find it. the only other IDM release I liked this year was LEFTFIELD! YEAH! Sorry Dave, but in this case I'm gonna have to consider this slop dance floor hyped Fatboy Slim peer "IDM" because I haven't heard anything interesting that fit the popular definitiion of IDM since the last Irresistible Force cd came out. I guess that probably doesn't fit, either. Damn. Maybe for my next cd, I'll scribble on my Winger anthology with a magic marker and sequence the pops and cracks with fruity loops and turn it into a 77 minute song and rip it to CD-R! --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

Check the 'Latinate Polysyllabic Track Titles Impress Me No End' remix CD-R, too. That shit is HYPE. Especially the remix by Abstractnounforaname who apparently converted the sound file to raw data, opened it in Photo Shop and added some lens flares and a motion blur. Large!
