Right... There was this guy who had some drums, and he met this other guy who had a bass... The result : drums and bass ! Together they fashioned a very primitively gargantuan heavy riff laden rock 'n breakbeats sound not disimilar to what you'd imagine a couple of 13 year old kids would try to engineer out of basic rock instrumentation after having been exposed to the most coruscating d'nb plus thrash metal during their childhood years, on a diet consisting of nothing but sunny delight, itchy and scratchy, and the strains of early puberty... Or to put it another way - like Lemmy menacing Squarepusher in the schoolyard but Squarepushers having none of it. Heavy metal you can kinda trance out on... Dance music that keeps you rooted to the spot, rocking. Without so much as a laptop in sight. Easily one of the best live bands on the planet right now. Not so much a definition of what the band is but moreso the view from where I'm standing. |---------+------------------------------> | | Alan Lockett | | | <Alan.R.Lockett@bri| | | stol.ac.uk> | | | | | | 24/05/2006 13:14 | | | | |---------+------------------------------> >------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| | | | To: Brian.Power@cso.ie | | cc: idm@hyperreal.org | | Subject: [idm] Lightning Bolt [WAS Re: [idm] noise source detection need still help] | >------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------| Sorry, I may be exposing myself to ridicule for demonstrating extreme unhipness for my state of ignorance about something that may well be radically Cool'n'Groovy and painfully In The Now, but... here goes... I saw them in Lavery's in Belfast, which seems to have reinvented it's middle bar as a rawk venue. Fantastic gig. They were supported by DJ Scotch Egg, who did an over the top gabber / cheese / noise set, which was just long enough not to not push it over the edge from entertaining to excruciating. Lightning Bolt arrived late, and by the time they'd actually set up their stacks it was past midnight, I left at half one and they showed no signs of slowing down.... A word of advice - because they play on the floor of the venues you have a choice of - being right next to them and being deafened and pushed about etc but actually able to SEE them - hanging back near the bar and listening but only catching glimpses of doing their thing
