Hello, I'm thinking of buying new monitors as I moved to London, and I cannot bring my huge Alesis Monitor 2 here. My budget is around 300 GBP = 450 euro = 550 USD. Which I'll get from selling my Alesis + amp. I want a small, active, 'best I can get for the price' monitors. What do you recommend? Thanks! I'm a big fan of KRK (www.krksys.com). In the last few years, they've released a low/mid-priced tier of monitors with the unfortunate name of "Rokit". I haven't actually heard these (I have a pair of the V8s), but they're supposedly an excellent value. Good luck, -- Dennis DeSantis www.dennisdesantis.com Mailing List: list-subscribe@lists.dennisdesantis.com qwerty /prikljucak wrote:

So, I just "inherited" a MIDI controller keyboard and I want to make it speak with my laptop. Does anybody have a particular adapter that they are fond of? Any substantial difference between USB-to-MIDI and Firewire-to-MIDI? Should I dismiss MIDI as decadent and write everything by hand in Max/DSP and Supercollider? (kidding) Anyway, any suggestions would be much appreciated. Also, any recommendations on a small-scale software sampler would be great, too... cheerio, LMG Chicago,IL p.s. actually, I wasn't kidding all that much about Max/DSP and Supercollider. If I had time (ha!) I'd love to become fluent in their language of robot love. p.p.s. I know this is old news by now, but I'm *still* loving Jackson and his Computer Band. you can get an maudio usb to 1x1 midi adaptor for like $30 midi adaptors are a commodity, since they all perform the same thing in the same way; there's no better brand than another just so long as it conforms to midi spec. On 1/15/06, Luis-Manuel Garcia <lgarcia@uchicago.edu> wrote:

To: Chork the Jangler <meatsock@gmail.com> MOTU micro lite (5x5 in/out) is nice solution if you intend on acquiring more midi controllers/modules if you're only using one controller, a cheapy USB to Midi will be fine yes, you should write custom controllers (OSC spec is great) PureData and Supercollider are awesome languages but Reaktor has a much faster learn curve and more graphical interface it also has total OSC integration all the NI samplers sound great, very EMUish great for glitches, breaks, idm in general if you can't splash on Kontakt2, check out Kompakt - much smaller and cheaper still sounds great - just minus the really powerful functions On 1/16/06, Chork the Jangler <meatsock@gmail.com> wrote:

thnx Chork also Luis, there is no discernable difference between USB 1.0 and Firewire when sending midi (even midi dumps, as midi is such a basic protocol) USB 2.0 & standard Firewire have comparable transfer rates the new Firewire has faster transfer than USB2, but this is only noticable when working with large amounts of data even then, the transfer rate is fast enough to only be important when backing up bulk data it's not terribly relevent for audio apps On 1/16/06, Chork the Jangler <meatsock@gmail.com> wrote:
