Please don't flame me for being off-topic, but my faith (not to say devotion, haaaaaha) in music has been restored: listening to Depeche Mode's Playing the Angel over and over and not tiring of it (yet!) For a group that's been plodding on for this many years to produce a something as strong as this album is imo quite an achievement. "Pain and Suffering in Various Tempos" indeed. I've always had a soft spot for DM, but I wasn't expecting much from this album, as I haven't liked much that they've done since Violator. Their last album was especially bad (I can't even remember what it was called - I downloaded it, and promptly deleted it after a single listen). I was really surprised by Playing The Angel, though. It's a fantastic record, on par with Violator and Black Celebration. Even Martin's songs to make the girls cry aren't too bad this time around. :) Greg :::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: Greg Clow ::: greg@stainedproductions.com ::::::::: concert & event promotions ::: http://www.stainedproductions.com :::::: electronic music radio & reviews ::: http://www.feedbackmonitor.com ::: electronic/experimental record label ::: http://www.pieheadrecords.com ::::::::: 158 Close Ave. 2nd Floor ::: Toronto, Ontario M6K 2V5 ::: Canada --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

definitely the best DM album in a while. the music production is awsome. martin's vocal coach needs to get him to lay off the vocal tremelo's though. his two songs I just have to skip because it's like nails on a chalkboard. its definitely the most violator album since... violator. which they kind of wink at by their inclusion of that acoustic version of 'clean'. I'll concur with Irene that this album is great. And 3 of the strongest songs, IMO, are the ones that Dave Gahan helped write (and not with Martin Gore). I saw Depeche Mode in Seattle a few weeks ago. I haven't heard the new album, and I'm not a big fan of the band, though I've always liked them. The show was GREAT. The show was in a large arena and I was skeptical that an "electronic" band would be engaging in that venue. Dave Gahan is very active and all over the stage. they have such a large volume of recordings, that I kept thinking "oh yeah, that's another good song I forgot about" . The live drummer was excellent, and Martin Gore is a fine guitarist. The show featured some of the best live video work I've ever seen. Live footage, mixed with pre-recorded video, and run through some cool filters. Highlights for me were Everything counts, Just can't get enough and Personal Jesus. I wasn't familiar with much of the newer material. The crowd was full of people in their 30s, wearing black with cool glasses :-) but there were lots of others there as well.
