I assume it's been a while since a topic such as this has been started, so I figured i'd spark one up again. Why exactly do you like IDM? Personally, I am attracted to the creativity of IDM musicians and the music that results from it. They tend to try new things and innovate in ways traditional musicians can't. In a sense, the studio has become their instrument of choice. IDM tends to have a sound that evokes emotions and mood unlike other forms of music. Coupled with some headphones and a relaxing night, IDM just kind of takes me places. You never know what to expect. Just wondering... :]

Well the reason I got into IDM was because it was the natural next step for me, I can explain. I developed my musical taste in the early 90s, at the time I was listening to Alt rock and some hip-hop. One day someone played NIN for me at a get together and I had never heard anything like it. Then I heard the NIN remix cds and they didn't even sound like music for the most part, Fixed and Further Down the Spiral, I listened to them over and over. Well I got into Industrial then, around 1994ish. After a while I got bored with that, and when I was on the net in 96/96 or so I started listening to different "techno" groups. I realized the wannabe-nihilism of a lot of the industrial really wasn't the appeal for me, it was the interesting distorted sounds. One day I stumbled on Autechre.....then Plaid, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher........rest is history, I was so blow away by it. Then I got into Ambient which is another story :P IDM is one of the few genres where you will hear something you never have before. I think that is the main appeal to me. -Kevin

Whether you call it IDM or not (let's just fucking accept it now, the genre debate has gone on too long) I just like any music that is thought provoking. Whether it's Stockhausen, Cage, AFX, Plaid or even Super Furry Animals, if it makes my brain work in a way that pleases me, I'm happy. I am about to start another topic here: IDM: Let's keep those three letters but instead of Intelligent Dance Music, call it something else. Like: Interestingly Devised Music Or something.... -----Original Message----- From: fiznut [mailto:fiznut@gmail.com] Sent: 15 September 2005 17:35 To: idm@hyperreal.org Subject: [idm] IDM Therefore I Am I assume it's been a while since a topic such as this has been started, so I figured i'd spark one up again. Oh jesus, are you kidding? I've got one: How do you pronounce Autechre? Please, people. Do not respond to that. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org

"Whether you call it IDM or not (let's just fucking accept it now, the genre debate has gone on too long)" I agree. Though it's certainly an ambiguous name for a genre of music, it is unlikely to ever go away. Atleast it humorously confuses those who aren't firmiliar. ;)
